PDX Premier was amazing. They were professional and flexible in setting it up. We hired them for both packing and moving and for both they took incredible care of our belongings and were very efficient. I'm about 9 months pregnant and we could not have done this without them. I couldn't recommend them more highly!

Excellent Job - very well done - 3,500 miles across country I found "moving with ease" through Thumbtak. I had a very long distance move. We needed our house contents which were in a 20 x 22 feet storage unit in Vancouver, WA moved to the middle of Florida. I had five quotes from various companies, three of these were through Thumbtak (who I had never used before).. Two of the quotes were from the big removal companies who were very expensive and very thorough. Of the three Thumbtak quotes, moving with ease was the only one who asked to see the storage unit. One of the big companies was there for 3/4 hour doing a full inventory of what needed shipped, Robert (moving with ease) took just over 10 minutes to size it up and gave me a good price within one hour of seeing the storage. We agreed the dates and times I needed and the job was his. Robert and a helper showed up just before the scheduled time on the Sunday and packed everything quickly and efficiently into the truck. I was extremely impressed by Robert's skill of packing the truck tightly and carefully for the minimum of movement. It was like watching Tetris with furniture, boxes and odd shaped items. After two hours, the truck was fully packed to the door and the storage unit was empty. It was amazing - his estimate was spot-on.. Eight days later on the scheduled date, just before the scheduled time, Robert knocked on the door of our new house in Florida. He took a quick look round the house and started work. He was joined by two local movers and they had the truck unloaded, beds assembled, furniture and boxes in place in the house in three hours. They could not have been more helpful. My summary would be, moving with ease is not like the other companies. There is no sales talk, no complications, communication is quick, you ask a question, you get an answer very quickly. No frills, no beating around the bush - no extra charges for piano, TV, Kayak (we had all three) straight to the point, no surprises AND the quote you are given is what you pay. They work hard and get the job done well. I am glad I went with my gut feeling that Robert was a very trustworthy person and ignored the doubts I had of using this small, unknown company. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

I hired Cherish movers to unload a 20 Ft pod. They arrived on time, laid a red carpet to protect the floors, asked where we wanted everything, worked efficiently, and were friendly & polite. I highly recommend Cherish Movers. Plus they are so reasonably priced. I am so pleased with these folks!

The night before they were supposed to come out, it snowed and then there was freezing rain, so everything the next morning was super icy. They were supposed to come at 10:30, but I called and asked if they could come later at around 12:30 so that hopefully some ice could melt. They were very obliging. They got here 10 minutes early to make sure that they were on time, but it was still icy! They used a shovel and rake I had and broke up the ice so they could move my stuff. They were very patient. They made sure to look at everything that needed to be moved first so that they could figure out how best to load the truck, then went at it! I was worried it wouldn't all fit, but they got it done with quite a bit of room to spare! They made sure to tie the stuff off so that it wouldn't be moving back and forth every time I brake or accelerate. I would definitely recommend these movers.

The guys were pretty late but kept in touch. The only complaint I have is my service was only an hour but the company has a three hour minimum policy so it was quite expensive. The movers however were great!

I would be happy to recommend Summit moving to anyone looking to hire movers. They had the best price, and did a great job. They were scheduled to be at my house at 9:00 but there was glitch with the truck, so they were 15 min late, BUT, they called right at 9:00 to let me know. This was greatly appreciated. They did an amazing job of packing my millions of things into the truck, without an inch to spare! They were friendly, and professional. The only reason I gave a 4 out of 5 instead of a 5 is because I thought they were a bit slow loading up. One of the movers was new, his first move according to him, and I saw him taking one little thing at a time to the truck, and then kind of hanging around. Don't know if he was just unsure about what to do next or ?? My previous experience with movers is that they go fast, taking as many things as they can carry at a time. So, I thought they could have moved faster with the loading. They did great with the unloading.

Small local job limited to one-bedroom size. My greatest concern was moving my movable base Sleep Number. This is a brick and mortar affiliate of National Moving. They have experience with Costco moving these specialty beds. All three referrals would have sufficed but I chose these folks because of these two reasons.

AmerApex helped us move from our high-rise condo in Chicago to a 3-floor townhome in the Bay Area. They helped us pack up most of our things (and the car) and load it into the truck, and it only took 3 days to arrive! Alex and his team are responsive, highly professional, neat, and respectful. I would highly recommend them to anyone doing a long distance move!

Jay and his associate, I forgot the name, were great. I will definitely recommend and use them again next year. They were quick and efficient with moving my belongings. There were a couple blemishes but I did not expect everything to be perfect. Their supervisor called me after the move was completed and provided a discount on my next move for the minor issues. I appreciate feeling valued as a customer. The movers worked their butts off. Again, I will recommend and use again.

I scheduled All the Right Moves at the last minute when friends who'd offered to help me move canceled. My brother suggested that I check-out Thumbtack and within a couple of hours All the Right Moves had contacted me via email and text. These two men were absolutely fabulous! They kept in constant contact before the move, arrived early and worked methodically and quietly. All the furniture was handled with care and thoughtfulness and they even drove the truck for me. There is a two-hour minimum charge and the move took two hours and forty minutes. When I was presented with the bill the gentleman figured the charge down to the minute, not rounding it off to three hours as I imagine some would do. I'll never ask family and friends to help me move again. These two men convinced me that hiring movers eases the stress and transforms what is normally a hectic day into one of peace. Thanks All the Right Moves!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
