Since January 2014, I have been studying guitar with David in a weekly group improvisation ensemble. We play well-known rock and blues tunes. Playing in this group under David's leadership has greatly improved my confidence and ability to play rhythm guitar, and also to improvise melodies using minor and major scales over chord changes. David provides a very supportive atmosphere for playing creatively, and every session is fun and inspiring. I always leave feeling motivated to practice during the week on my own. David is also a master of working patiently with a variety of musical skills and abilities among our group members, and helping the group listen to each other and encourage each other. I highly recommend David as a guitar teacher for both private and group study.

David teaches me classical guitar. He is kind, encouraging, and patient. He gently instructs me on the importance of finger positioning and rhythm. David is well-grounded in musical theory and can discuss the history of musicology. Each lesson has been a positive and enlightening experience. Thanks to my teacher, I have rediscovered my love of classical guitar!

With a PhD in music, David Shere brings a wealth of knowledge to music instruction, and he's a fantastic musician and performing artist. I've been in his improvisation class for a year now, in addition to studying theory with him. He's an outstanding teacher and working with him has led to a huge improvement in my performances. Plus his classes are a lot of fun; no small accomplishment considering how much material we cover! I highly recommend David as a teacher.

David is an excellent guitar teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable and professional without being stuffy. He really takes the time to understand what his student is interested in learning. I am enjoying my lessons with him!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I'm constantly reading new guitar books that come out, and learning new music. I spend a lot of time on the internet looking for lessons and tutorials for myself and my students. I write a lot of tutorial material myself.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Learning the guitar is a long-term commitment. There are habits and motor skills that you need to build. You have to memorize some music theory and some basic chords and scales before you can play your favorite song. I get a lot of first-time students who say "I just want to take a couple of lessons to learn the basics." It doesn't work like that. If you want to make real progress, you need to take lessons for at least a year.
