Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

JK was great!! We got new furniture to move in and old furniture to move out! These were large dressers and our stairs are crazy. They fit me in last minute due to the furniture coming a lot sooner than expected. Very happy to work with them and will definitely use them in the future!

I had Kingdom Army movers come out and move some furniture for me around the house. My first impression was a positive one when they showed up at their scheduled time. June and his crew were incredible! Not a wall dinged or any furniture nicked as they navigated around my staircase to move some pieces over 150lbs. Their professionalism and customer service skills were on point. If you're looking for some movers who care for you and your belongings, Kingdom Army is the one to call. Thanks June!!

Leon was a great communicator about scheduling, changing the schedule (I did that and he was very accommodating) and he showed up on time. I had he and his helper just move some furniture to our garage because we're re-doing our floors, and I scheduled him to come back to reverse the process. Great experience!

Within a few hours of contacting him and on a day with bad weather, Jaime and his helper came to my aid to move a piece of furniture I had no help with. They picked it up and delivered it to me in minimal time. I will be using his help in the future. Thank you so much for being there for me and I hope to see you in the future for more assistance.

After reading all of the great reviews and speaking with who I believe is the owner I was very excited to use this company for my small move from federal way to Seattle. I specifically told the owner on the phone that I was on a budget for 3 hours with 2 guys and that my items were a small load. He made it clear he understood and the appointment was set. My move was small, and when I say small I mean the only thing they were moving for me were 6 bins which consisted of clothing, pots and pans, and cleaning supplies and the only actual furniture they were moving of mine was a mattress, box spring, and head board as well as 2 small light weight nightstands. Not a couch, not a dining room table or chairs, not a TV or even a lamp. One thing I noticed though was the two gentleman moving my things were taking an extremely long amount of time moving my things into my new place. I was inside unpacking and they would leave and it would be around a half hour before they would come in with more things. It started becoming clear they were running up the clock, at least in my opinion. So you can understand my surprise when this extremely small move that had two grown men moving my things ended up costing me ALMOST A THOUSAND DOLLARS!!! it was a final cost of over 800 dollars. I was extremely angry, confused, and still feel extremely taken advantage of. Once I expressed my shock and continued asking how a moving load that small takes over 7 hours the owner text me back stating he’ll take off the leaving cost of his guys (which is the cost he charges for the time it takes for his guys to get back to headquarters from your place) but by that point taking off 30 bucks didn’t even matter. While it’s clear others have seemed to have great experiences with this company I say please be aware. This company will very much take what they can get and will run up the clock if they feel they can get away with it. I should have spoken up when I realized what they were doing, don’t make my same mistake.
