Hired on Thumbtack

The call began cordially and remained professional during the initial discussion and while I shared photos of the work. The contractor then began explaining his costs, stating that he had approximately $162 invested, or an amount to that effect, just from receiving/responding to the job inquiry through Thumbtack. He also mentioned that everyone has a budget and asked what I was looking to spend. When I provided the amount I had in mind—based on his request for my budget—his tone and approach noticeably changed. He began emphasizing his operating costs, including manpower, mileage, travel back and forth, and other expenses, and stated that there was no way he would perform the work for that amount. At no point did I insist that he complete the work within my suggested budget. I was simply answering the question he asked regarding what I expected to spend. There is always room for negotiation, and the amount I provided was not a firm cap; I was flexible depending on the scope of work and a reasonable explanation of the costs involved. Unfortunately, rather than attempting to negotiate, provide a counteroffer, adjust the scope of work, or explain what could reasonably be accomplished within or near my proposed budget, I felt I was being judged or condemned simply for the amount I suggested. The noticeable change in attitude following my response made the conversation unnecessarily uncomfortable. At that point, I felt ending the phone call was warranted. My concern is not that the contractor declined to perform the work at my suggested price. He is entitled to determine what his time and services are worth. My concern is how the conversation changed after I answered a budget question that he specifically asked. A straightforward counteroffer or professional explanation that my estimate was too low would have been completely understandable.
