I'm the Clerk of my church, and Corey is cleaning the interior -- all regular cleaning (vacuuming, dusting, bathrooms, entry floor tile) as well as washing all interior relites and windows. He is thorough, great attention to detail, quick, efficient, versatile and comes with a love of whatever he is doing and desire to satisfy the customer. I would highly recommend him to any business or homeowner.

David is probably one of the nicest and genuine people we've had the pleasure of working with since moving to the PNW. My wife and I live in a industrial loft space that some would describe as challenging if they weren't trained or had an eye for design. There's limited storage spaces (two closets), low amounts of provided lighting (4 light fixtures for 1100 sq ft two-floors), and has lots of cement (i.e.- walls, floors, etc). This was challenging for my wife and I, because our home prior to moving to Seattle was setup in a traditional modern deco fashion and had many features already installed and built in. David took our space-- and over the course of 5 months-- made our space feel warm, practical, and inviting while still maintaining the industrial look that I was seeking. He added color and lighting to key areas within the space that made the space feel welcoming and bigger. He also changed our upstairs loft area to make it feel as though we have several rooms within the one space. I have recommended his work to several of my co-workers since working with him. I would hire him again for my interior design needs. Thanks again, David!

Cecily was fantastic! She was super punctual, professional and quick. We appreciated how fast she was able to complete the project and we are super pleased with the outcome. The home was designed with a very clean and unique aesthetic that highlighted the best features of the space. She has a great eye for design and able to make even small rooms feel open and inviting. We are so glad we got to work with her!

Our office had a very dated interior that needed a make over. Francine who came highly recommended by our friend, came to our office and gave us an overall plan right away with implementation and cost estimate. She understood our needs and budget so well. She not only selected furniture and accessories for our office but also gave us useful advice on our office atmosphere from music selection, clutter removal, plants and commercial signs etc. Now, I look forward to walking in my office every morning and enjoy the feeling of empowerment with the new look. I highly recommend Francine who is very confident and competent with interior design and managing projects in every aspect.

I recently hired Andrea at DeBerry Interior Design to solve a privacy issue in our home with window treatments. She came up with a solution that was inventive, flexible, attractive, and reasonably priced. I have found her to be exceptionally talented, experienced, and enthusiastic. She thinks out of the box, and finds aesthetically pleasing ways of dealing with difficult design problems. I highly recommend her.

We discovered Martina / Design Stage through Yelp! early in 2013. Our small 1950's house needed some adjustments to accommodate how we, a family of four & dog, live. After three years of ownership we were ready, particularly since we needed to get our house appraised for a refi. As home improvement projects go, our most glaring need was landscaping, a bizarre layout of maze-like rotting fences, overgrowth and weeds everywhere. Regrettably, most of our budget had to be used for landscaping so anything interior had to be done on a thin budget. Upfront, I explained the circumstances to Martina. I also mentioned that this was our third remodel and we could comfortably work in an unstructured way. For instance, minimal design illustrations and face-to-face meetings to review materials, etc. I would not recommend this for most people. Design Stage's approach allows you at adjust the "sweat equity" meter to accommodate your budget. Note that if we are fortunate enough to work with Design Stage in the future, we will definitely move out of the way as much as possible because Martina, I believe, can work small miracles. We had one very challenging area trying to be the house entry, coat closet, my office and guest area. I had spent many, many hours drawing up ideas and had presented them to Martina. She delicately placed them aside and presented a plan that was mind-blowing. We immediately got our contractors busy to implement her ideas. The end product was beyond anything we could have imagined. Granted, there's still a lot we could do to improve the interior. But Martina was able to take the resources we had available, fully consider our budget and assemble it all in such a way to absolutely maximize the potential. We loved our house the moment we moved in. But Martina helped really make it ours and we feel it every time we step through the door.

I recently bought a new condo in Seattle and wanted a modern look but had no idea where to begin until I met Lisa. She was very knowledgeable, professional, and easy to work with and right from the get go she was enthusiastic and hard working always going the extra mile to get things done. She was very perceptive in her design instincts regarding the clean modern look I was looking for and went beyond my expectations in her ability to manifest the style I was trying to conceptualize. I especially liked the fact that she had no hesitation in looking for items outside the store she was working at at that time to achieve the perfect look. If you are looking for an interior designer I highly recommend that you contact her.

Alison was an amazing partner in designing our living room and dining room interiors. She truly listened to our visions and hopes and was able to "articulate" them with a comprehensive design proposal. I loved the color palette and the detail in all the pieces she picked. She also worked really well with our price point and was able to find amazing items. I really valued her professionalism and quick turnaround, especially given how much work clearly went into the design proposal. She also iterated really quickly with us and was responsive and helpful as our ideas shaped. I couldn't have asked for a better partner!

Our job was a gut, re-construct and three 'pop-out' additions on an existing 3,700 sq. ft. 1953 Edmonds, WA single family residence. Set on a steep slope, this Sound view house presented a number of complex drainage and interior re-design problems. Mariusz was both through and clever in terms of the solutions he offered. He extensive construction industry expertise and knowledge of local government and State regulations and practices was invaluable. If you need a job done well, call Mariusz Rynkiewicz.

We hired Mandy to make some improvements to our outdated kitchen. She came up with a design and materials that updated the feel without losing the charm. My wife is very indecisive and impatient. Mandy handled my her with grace, humor, and respect; she straightened out a flaky contractor with tact; and she got creative when things didn't go according to plan. She finished on schedule and under-budget. We will definitely bring her back when we decide on next project if she is still willing to make the 1+ hour drive.

Kari was the interior designer for my house which included the main floor (dining and living room), as well as bedrooms and bathrooms. She chose the paints for all the rooms as well as the furniture. She spent a lot of time working to understand my needs and what I like and then researched lighting, furniture, curtains, paints etc to create a cohesive, welcoming, warm environment in my house. I loved working with Kari and will use her in future design work.

She has designed and built my home from the foundation to façade, also she has done its interior design. She is quite a genius woman who always wanted to keep a high level of responsibility and management through the entire project. More importantly, she enjoys an outstanding inherent creativity and innovation in her work as an Architect in a way that she is able to design in the best expression based on your preferences. All in one, I highly recommend her if you would like to get your project designed desirably and created perfectly.

I have a love for interior design in general, but what I love most about my job is the ability to personalize a space and truly turn a house into a home. I enjoy getting to know my clients on a personal level, and treat them as part of my team - after all, it is ultimately their home, not mine! My approach to design varies, as every project is different, but no matter what project I'm working on, I always bring my sense of humor.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

          What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

          • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
          • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
          • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
          • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

          • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
          • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
            • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
          • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
            • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
          • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
          • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

          • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
          • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
          • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
          • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
