Thank you to Highland Tree Services. They did a great job. This was for a project for my friend who's trees had completely overgrown her yard. Highland Tree Services came and cleared it down for her and now she has light! We paid for a full day's labor and they were able to get a lot done.

Duran Landscaping did a great job with installing new sod for my lawn. The service was quick, and even though the crew was delayed waiting for sod delivery, still completed the work on the day they promised. They cleaned up all of the mess and other than the pretty green lawn, I can't tell they were there. I would definitely hire them again if I needed lawn services.

Carlos did a wonderful job with the 3/4 removal of a tree located in a very tight spot between 2 city homes, whose branches also had grown into the power lines. This required a power drop and additional care and knowledge. He and his crew did the job for the price quoted, which was very reasonable, and left no branch behind! I was more than pleased with the work, will use Carlos Landscaping again, and will recommend him to anyone needing ANY type of lawn, land or tree care! :-)

Apples did a very credible job for us. The work involved sidewalk replacement. The price was quite reasonable. Pedro and his crew were timely, delivered as promised and quickly made arrangements for another contractor to grind tree roots, as that was necessary. Apples coordinated with the city inspectors and worked to their specifications and satisfaction.

I had two tree stumps in my backyard that needed to be grinded down. Mr. Cooney was the first to respond to my request for service on Thumbtack and offered a very reasonable price. A little back story... I had my trees cut earlier this week by a different company. The tree service company that cut my trees did not honor their quote for the tree cut and stump grind. After hearing my situation, Mr. Cooney graciously restored my faith in an honest quote and company. Within one day of posting for the stump grinding service, the job was done. I actually had several smaller trees that needed to be cut and grinded down and after agreeing on a price, Mr. Cooney went back to work. Mrs. Cooney also helped by bringing a new chain for the chainsaw 😀. I would recommend Cooney's Stump Grinding to anyone in need of their service. Mr. Cooney is a U.S. Military Veteran and his honesty, work ethic, and performance show it. I am very happy with the work performed.

I needed the fence installation quite urgently. Noel responded promptly and tried to accommodate my request. He came out to give estimate as promised. His price was fair.. better than competitors. What more impressive was his hard working team. They started early and finished earlier than expected with excellent and professional work. Then I hired him for another fence installation which was more challenging with lots of big trees and roots along the line. They completed their work sooner than expected again with high-quality work. Noel is humble and professional. I'm happy to have hired him and I will keep adding more works for him to do. Thanks!

They came to mow; I showed them a diseased, dead tree & they dealt with removing the bad & trimmed tree so it looks excellent! Then they mowed, doubling back over some areas. It looks wonderful now AND the price was very reasonable- $100 for 2+ hours work & hauling it all away! Very professional & pleasant. I'd highly recommend them.

Grays landscaping did a wonderful job with our yard. I wish I had before pictures, but before our yard was mostly dirt and we had a huge bottom deck on top of a falling apart concrete patio. Grays landscaping removed all the old concrete and bottom deck and our old grass. Placed in new soil and sod and added beautiful bark around our tree and around the trim of the yard. I love how it turned out and I look forward to doing business with them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.
