Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

What’s the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

Interior designers operate more on the architectural side of building projects. In conjunction with architects, they work on the design of a building or home to best suit the needs of the users or residents. Interior designers are generally experienced in construction and understand how architectural planning works, according to NewSchool of Architecture & Design. And some interior designers will perform the duties of an interior decorator.

Interior decorators, on the other hand, work with fabrics, accessories, furniture, art, colors, textures and materials to make the inside look fashionable and pleasant.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

We were looking to get our kitchen and living redone and contacted Pallavi Kale for the job, she responded in moments and was able to accommodate a meeting the next day. We were initially hesitant considering her hourly prices were on the higher side, but her design estimate had considerably fewer hours than the other designers we had consulted. She adjusted to our budget, yet delighting us with the final outcome of our home. Highly recommend Pallavi Kale Interiors!

I worked with Pallavi to get my Living/Dining decorated and Powder room remodeled. First impression was that Pallavi was extremely proffessional, thorough and detail oriented. There was always a clear reason why she chose a particular color, or furniture piece, or accessory. When I was confused about the powder design since I couldn't visualize what the final product would look like, Pallavi blew me away by the 3D rendering of her design. If I were to photograph my powder today, it would look exactly like her 3D. I did not know designers could do that. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my decision to work with Pallavi and Pallavi Kale Interiors.

Amen, was very generous with his time and ideas when he came to our house for consultation. He told us what would work and what won't and gave us a fair estimate of cost as well as effort. He even shared his contractor details with us. Few of the upgrades in the house will turn into design projects for which we will definitely go with Amen. Amen came across as a very good hearted, honest and kind human being. We highly recommend Amen for consultation, design and execution of any interior or exterior projects in your house.

When I moved to Seattle for a tech job, I decided to hire Camp Opal to design and style my apartment. I wondered if my apartment, at slightly over 500 sq ft, was too small for this. It's not! Christina and Lisa provided me with a selection of brilliant designs that were tailored to my taste and my apartment. What really impressed me was that view from my apartment's window influenced their color schemes. To top everything off, Christina and Lisa are extremely friendly and cool. As a stereotypical tech guy, I wondered if I was the right sort of person to hire interior designers. Really, anyone with a desire to improve the appearance of their home is the right sort of person. Christina and Lisa have a wealth of knowledge and styling talent that can help you get there.

Liz Has been so helpful. I wasn’t sure what to think, as a first time hiring an interior designer, but I knew I needed help with my house. She listened to my wants, stayed within my budget, and found some amazing finds to make my house complete. She is always looking for exactly what you need and she always finds it! She makes it feel comfortable, like decorating with a friend and she takes every precaution with Covid-19 so I felt safe the entire time. I would recommend her over and over. If you need anything done with you house or even just want a quick makeover or organization to your space. Choose Liz. You won’t be disappointed. I will be relying on her for more in the future.

I hired Emily to help me out with a room that seemed impossible in our Craftsman home. My fiance and I couldn't agree on one thing to go in the space or set a reasonable budget to furnish it correctly. It has multiple windows, doors, and even a fireplace so we decided professional help was necessary for sorting out the flow of the room and bringing our needs in the room together. And since it is the first space you see when you come through our front door we wanted it to be a clean, trendy, usable and welcoming space for us and our visitors. Emily listened and worked with me and made all of designing, assembling, and completing the finishing touches on my now FAVORITE room in the house happen flawlessly. She was able to use many existing items in the room that were working and add amazing items to bring the room together. Everyone comes in our home and not only raves about how great the room is but how it's the perfect embodiment of my style. Which I couldn't agree more! Emily is an amazing person to work with and her upbeat attitude is a refreshing. I'd recommend her to anyone looking for help with interior design projects or problems. And I can't wait to hire her for help again.

David is probably one of the nicest and genuine people we've had the pleasure of working with since moving to the PNW. My wife and I live in a industrial loft space that some would describe as challenging if they weren't trained or had an eye for design. There's limited storage spaces (two closets), low amounts of provided lighting (4 light fixtures for 1100 sq ft two-floors), and has lots of cement (i.e.- walls, floors, etc). This was challenging for my wife and I, because our home prior to moving to Seattle was setup in a traditional modern deco fashion and had many features already installed and built in. David took our space-- and over the course of 5 months-- made our space feel warm, practical, and inviting while still maintaining the industrial look that I was seeking. He added color and lighting to key areas within the space that made the space feel welcoming and bigger. He also changed our upstairs loft area to make it feel as though we have several rooms within the one space. I have recommended his work to several of my co-workers since working with him. I would hire him again for my interior design needs. Thanks again, David!
