We've hired Bixno twice and Nolan has been professional and great to work with both times. The first he hung a TV for us and did the job quickly and well, even happily allowing our son to bother him with questions. The second time we hired him to install Smart Switches and he ran into some issues. Rather than giving up, he spent more than an hour trying to remedy the situation before determining that we needed an electrician, not a handyman. He apologized for being unable to complete the job and refused to charge us. We offered to at least pay SOMETHING for his time and he was adamant that he wouldn't take anything. We had an electrician come the next day and it turned out we needed new wires run into a couple of the switch boxes, which explained why Nolan was struggling and told us he was right - we needed an electrician not a handyman. We'd gladly hire Nolan again.

Stephen helped us repair a rotting door frame and even patched a hole in our drywall while he was there. Friendly, quality work, and truly a handyman that every homeowner needs! Thanks Stephen.

I am more happy with Jarrod's work. His work on my lopsided tempered glass door was professional. He easily fixed the heavy shower door and hinge. He installed closet shelves for me, careful to place in studs. He used a level light when installing the shelves. He was not in a hurry to get job done. He is thoughtful to do the job right. I paid him more than he quoted because he did a superior job and was professional. I would have him back to do more difficult jobs. It was clear that this handyman knows his work and takes pride in his workmanship!

Justin was on time for the job. He repaired a broken water line in my garage wall. What I appreciated was that he made sure I witnessed and approved each stage of the repair to ensure customer satisfaction. He then went above expectations by installing extra insulation in the wall (that was previously missing) and then re-sheet rocked. Justin did an excellent job. I highly recommend his handyman services and will definitely use him in the future when needed.

Jeff was an awesome contractor and did excellent work. He was very punctual and has a great attention to detail, which I value. Coming from the east coast, we have had terrible contractors come through our home, so it was nice to have such a professional person perform the work we needed today. I would highly recommend Jeff for any carpentry job in the future.

Enrique came to repair a leaking bathtub faucet, and to service our furnace. He was prompt, professional, and kept me informed every step of the way, including potential costs. The furnace was quickly repaired. He discovered that the faucet was leaking behind the wall, caused by a connection of PVC pipe to a copper intersection. He consulted me with the cost and choice of materials and labor, prior to purchasing, and was thorough and efficient, as well as courteous and professional. He completed the job, returning on the following day (a Sunday) to make sure the connections were properly fixed to prevent another leak, and also to replace the wall board. He is knowledgeable, and left the bathroom, bedroom wallboard, and floor clean when the repair was complete. He charged exactly as quoted, and provided receipts for the replacement parts. I highly recommend him for handyman services, and wouldn't hesitate to call him again if we need plumbing, painting/drywall, water heater, or furnace repairs.

Jose did handyman and painting work when I was selling my house and he was a lifesaver! I hired another painter but he left many part unfinished and sloppy and it was not in a condition to be sold. I then hired Jose and he painted outside of my house superbly and on time. He also fixed all the mistakes of my previous painter made inside the house. He also does handyman work so I wasn't waiting on anything that needs to fixed. I thought I couldn't sell the house in the spring selling season but Jose came after his other job to help me at night so I can make the date. Not only Jose does fantastic work but he could not be a nicer person. I am so glad I met Jose and any time I need handyman work or painting, I will call Jose and recommend to my friends!

Art is hands down the best plumber/handyman I have ever worked with. He completely remodeled two bathrooms in my home, and they look absolutely beautiful! He was in constant communication with me, and took way less time to complete the work as I had anticipated. His rates are very reasonable, and the quality of his work was excellent. He also has a team of people whom he works with, that were also just as professional and hard working as he was. I would HIGHLY recommend Art for any plumbing, or handy man services that you would need. He can do it ALL! I will definitely be calling him for all future projects in my home.

Ivan can handle seemingly any handyman job, on time, quickly, and with no fuss. He helped us with a wide variety of projects in less than four hours: 1) fixing a doorway threshold, 2) fixing another door that was scraping a floor, 3) fixing the torn screen in a door, 4) installing wall plates over built-in speaker wires, 5) replacing a bit of baseboard trim, and 6) installing a bathroom sink faucet. We wouldn't hesitate to reach out to him again.

Antonio built a new floor and subfloor in my closet after the hot water tank leaked, and ruined/rotted the floor. He is fast and efficient, did an excellent job, and is very kind and respectful. I could tell he knew exactly what he was doing, without question. He also saved me about $700 from what a water restoration Co. quoted. I will absolutely hire him again! Even the plumber that put in the new tank was very, very impressed, and asked for his information.

Chris is the ultimate craftsman and did a beautiful job for us. We hired him to repair the 30 year old drywall in our garage that had never been painted. He did a fantastic job drywalling, repairing, and painting, and now the garage is the best looking room in our house. Thanks, Chris! Paula

I called Bryan to finish a fence installation that was started by some handyman I hired from Craigslist (BIG MISTAKE). Bryan was fast, efficient and a pleasure with whom to work. I ended up hiring him for a complete REMODEL of my home, from floor to ceiling. Bryan was, by far, the most economical and professional contractor I've worked with here in the Northwest. His work is of a very high quality and he is a perfectionist. Nothing was left undone, or halfway done. Each project he completed was done right the first time. He is a very hard worker, and cleans up after himself. I plan on doing another remodel on a different home and I am hiring Bryan, without hesitation. Rest assured, your work will get done in the time he states and will be done with an exceptional eye to detail. I really could not recommend him more highly; truly, best business relationship I've experienced in Olympia.

Larry was great to work with. He was very responsive, friendly and calm throughout the whole process. We had a couple of hick ups due to the tv mount being a cheaper one but Larry went out of his way to ensure we’d get the job done. Great handy man. As he was leaving we discussed some future projects as well. Would definitely hire again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
