Booking for the day and time I wanted was easy.  The guys they sent were pros, and they made my move as quick and painless as possible. They even re-assembled my bed frame for me and probably did a better job than I would have on my own.  I've never used a moving company before, but my experience with People-Movers has convinced me to let them handle all the heavy lifting (you try moving heavy furniture up three floors with no elevator, it's no picnic!).  Can't recommend highly enough.

Mr. McGill came to our house and moved some heavy steel case filing cabinets into our basement from a U Haul truck. Difficult move, stairs and corners. Was very courteous and professional. Would not hesitate to use him again.

Yuri and crew were fantastic for my one bedroom in-town move. This was my first time hiring professional movers, and because my closing date got moved at the last minute, it involved last minute scheduling around two complicated elevator reservations. The front office dealt with the scheduling issues deftly. My two-man crew arrived on time, called ahead of time to let me know when they'd arrive, packed delicate and heavy items very well, and worked quickly. The total time was slightly more than originally estimated, but included quite a lot of careful packing on their part. I will certainly use On Budget Movers the next time I have a local move and highly recommend them!

These guys were amazing. They moved a very heavy treadmill from a second story bedroom to the basement. The stairs are not a straight shot, so not an easy stairway to move a large heavy treadmill. They were very personable and professional. I would highly recommend them.

Best. Movers. Ever. We've had Move for less do several internal moves (shifting heavy things around/up-downstairs within our home), as well as a very challenging garage cleanup that involved a dump run along with reorganization. The only guys we'll ever use or recommend

Booking and setting up appointment was fast & easy. I hired 3 movers and 1 truck. Movers were professional & hard working. I believe the only break they took was the drive between my old house to my new house. I gave a 4 star rating for these reasons... As stated above the movers were professional, however they could not figure out how to take apart a crib. I had to do it myself. I also had to put it back together on my own cause they said it was for safety reasons which I guess was fine, but other times that I've moved with other companies the movers always took apart and put the crib back together with no problem. Also they didn't know how to put a bunk bed together. I had to assist which was a pain cause I have a 2 year old toddler who was at my feet some of the time. Mind you, I took the bunk bed apart prior to movers showing up to save time. But like I said other companies/movers put it back together with no problem & no instructions. Other than that my experience with All Service Moving company was good.

just moved us from seattle to lummi island, was a great experience working with them. was a few minutes late but they more than made up for it in their very positive attitude and efficient work. they moved a monster piece of furniture (2 piece heavy wooden entertainment center) that made my back hurt watching them move it down 2 flights of stairs and then up 1 flight. final bill was under their estimate. i would recommend them highly! Oh and Craig their estimator does a great Christoper Walken impression.

1st time using Thumbtack and At-ease moving and it was an all around great experience! I have hired movers 5 times in the past and these guys did the best. I had to change my move date a couple times and Justin was very easy to work and easy going about my changes. Had a few heavy big items that they had to muscle through and they got it done with no complaints. Would hire them again for my next move, which we all hope won't be soon.

These guys are the best. I had ordered a a very large and heavy bathroom vanity that my husband and I could not get into the bathroom. They came and had it done in 20 minutes for a very reasonable price. They are my movers of choice and I will refer to them and always use their service.

I had a quick job for Anthony to unload/load a large metal structure that weighed 250lbs or so on to a truck. He was precisely on-time, reliable, and a real nice guy! I hope to work with him again in the future.

Larry added some gutter downspouts to a multi-level roof that had upper level gutters emptying out onto the next level roof surface. This arrangement was causing leaks during heavy rains. Larry added downspouts from the upper level gutters to empty into the next level gutters. Roof leak issues solved and the work looks great. Larry also replaced 2 man-doors in my garage that posed a security risk because they had doggy doors in them; one leading into the house and one leading into the yard. Excellent work on all projects. Larry informed me when he ran into unexpected issues and gave me options on how he planned to work around the issues and he did not charge extra for any of the unforeseen work. I even changed the original plan midway through the gutter job and he had no problems accommodating. He did quality work. The gutters function way better and look great. The new doors are set better and balanced better than the old doors. Great Work!!! I will be using LG Home Improvement and Maintenance again for future projects for sure!

Great American Moving Systems has an amazing reputation in the market. My brother has previously hired them and he also recommended them. I have to admit, they really are awesome. Their men were so professional every step of the way. I was very impressed by the efficiency and skills shown by these men. They lifted my heavy furniture with such ease. Everything was so well packed that nothing suffered any kind of damages on the way. I received everything right on the scheduled as well. This company is totally legit!

Loved my movers from Bum Rush! Despite a huge headache dealing with U-Haul and a U-Box order, they were very patient and friendly. The crew was quick and I trusted them with my things. Thank you again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.
