About
The Music Lab is a studio where your child can build a solid musical foundation at the piano, while preparing their mind for life in the twenty-first century. I believe in the power of musical study not only to promote a rich internal life, but also to foster discipline, resilience, problem-solving, and self confidence. That's why I call it a lab; I encourage optimism, risk-taking, failure, and most importantly, growth. This is a low-stakes environment where your child can push themselves, and at the same time, develop a life-long skill that they will treasure. Lessons take place at Michael's personal studio, affectionally dubbed "The Cottage" by his students. Zoom lessons are also available for students who prefer that option. About Michael: Since graduating from PLU with a music degree in 2013, Mr. Clark has been an active performer, composer, and teacher in the Puget Sound region. Past teachers include Dr. Gregory Youtz, Dr. Oksana Ezhokina, Dr. Jeffery-Bell Hanson, and Dr. Jane Harty -- herself a student of Nadia Boulanger, who taught Aaron Copland, Daniel Barenboim, and Philip Glass, among others. Mr. Clark currently works with a thriving studio of over 30 students, young and old. His students consistently rank highly in regional competitions, and furthermore have accepted positions at music schools around the country, most notably APU and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Mr. Clark worked with Emmy-award winning producers to score the documentary "Namibia Nine" in 2015, and currently scores the weekly podcast "This is Design School", now in it's fourth season and available on iTunes. He also serves as acting director for the Russian Chamber Music Foundation of Seattle's annual competition, and is a board member at Music Northwest, in Seattle. Mr. Clark believes in a collaborative approach to learning, and challenges his students in unique and innovative ways, with and without technology, to foster an effective, therapeutic --- and importantly -- fun, learning process.

Michael Clark is a fantastic piano teacher that has made piano lessons a great experience for my children. He has a fun and enthusiastic personality that is really enjoyable to be around. He gives very effective feedback and has a real gift for explaining things in a way that the children understand and feel positive about. We have really enjoyed lessons at the Music Lab and are looking forward to another great year!

I can’t say enough good things about Michael and The Music Lab! My Son has been taking Piano lessons with Michael for almost two years now and loves it! Michael is fantastic with kids and knows how to help each kids individual needs to grow musically. He takes the time to truly get to know each one of his students and develop a plan that works for them. If your considering lessons for your kiddo or yourself I can’t recommend Michael and The Music Lab enough!

My 7 year old twins and I took piano lessons with Michael Clark. He was friendly, professional, accommodating and very patient. One of the twins was accelerating more than the other, and Michael had no problems adjusting his lessons to reflect his skill without putting pressure on the other twin to perform to her brother's level. Michael became a friend and we miss him dearly. Wish we could have taken him with us when we moved. He is also very talented, so if you have a chance to go to one of his performances, GO!

Michael is an amazing musician and teacher. He makes adult piano lessons fun. He deals well with and is flexible with the varying practice levels that come with adult work schedules.
