Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

Don't use this guy, but if you do make sure you have every tiny little detail in writing & keep all documentation. We hired him to build us a new kitchen island with walnut butcher block counter top. Ended up with a nightmare. Butcher block started falling apart at the seams within a week of install. Not to mention the gaping hole in the middle of our island that he did not take into account with his measurements. It took forever for cabinet doors to get installed. When they were installed it looked nothing like what we imagined, they weren't even flush with the cabinetry popping out on the hinge side. The trim fell off the drawers. List goes on & on. His work is sloppy, with no attention to details. He walked away from the job after hearing our complaints. We hoped he would address & correct. However, we did get most of the money refunded, but that was after we threaten to go after his bond to get it. We are now stuck having to eat the cost of removing & disposing this joke of an island & the hassle of finding a new reputable company to redo the work. We learned a lot from this. Our advice get the job done right by someone that has a good reputation....it is worth spending a little more, to avoid such a headache & disaster in your home.
Hammer X Nail's reply
unfortunately Miss Allen bought an oven that did not fit her current island. to make matters worse she bought a down draft range hood that was not supposed to be used with the type of oven she bought which left the gap she is referring to. So they came to me to have them build a new island. Stating all along that "we don't want to pay a lot" after putting several options in front of them for a butcher block top, they decided that those were all too expensive, but that they "still wanted that expensive look". I tried giving them a less expensive option and sadly it did not work out so i refunded their money. Several more options were put in front of them to come up with a new top. Again, all too expensive. This was right around Christmas, so I'm guessing money was becoming and issue and when demands were made above and beyond the original contract I walked off the job. They asked for money back and they got it. Months ago. why the delayed response? I'm guessing the new company she hired to do a top for her still could not fix the fact that the stove and the range hood do not go together. I learned a very valuable lesson. When someone wants a "very expensive look for cheap", ill pass or send them to ikea.
