I honestly cannot recommend Ken Cravillion enough. In short: Not only were the photos phenomenal, but also working with him was an absolute pleasure. He has a natural talent for setting up and framing great photos, and he has a great eye for catching these little moments that just make for amazing pictures. We simply could not be happier with our decision to hire Ken as our wedding photographer and he was worth every cent.
We originally planned for an outdoor ceremony but the weather, that day, had other plans. Even though it was raining out, Ken went out of his way to scout out and find an awesome place for usway on the other side of our wedding venuethat we could go for our wedding party pictures without being rained on... and the sky and background in those pictures turned out amazing! He really went the extra mile finding this spot for us, and it is a great example of Ken's natural eye, for this sort of thing, and his dedication to getting great pictures for you.
One thing that was important to us about choosing a wedding photographer was finding somebody who would not only take some great looking posed photographs, but we really wanted a photographer who could capture great action moments throughout the day. I mean, we will *remember* who was there, but what we really wanted to capture and preserve were the actual moments: our friends and family having fun together. There are tons of photographers who can show you beautiful posed pictures, but its a lot harder to be in the right place, at the right time, and capture great pictures that really make you *feel* what it was like to be there, in that moment.
When we looked at the final picturesespecially the "After the Ceremony" picturesthat is exactly what he did. He caught all kinds of amazing action shots of people dancing and having fun, of special moments between our friends and family and us, and tons of just beautiful shots. He was ALL OVER that place getting photos of different people from different angles, and he was never getting in anyone's way. Several of our guests even commented to us about how easy he was to work with, how he was always moving, and how quickly he was able to get pictures without keeping our guests from enjoying the evening. (I mean, how often do you expect to get compliments about your photographer BEFORE even seeing any of the photos?!)
I was pretty much sold on him when I read his website and he described himself as "a ninja with a bunch of cameras around [his] neck"... but it is honestly a surprisingly accurate description: he caught so many little moments that I literally had NO IDEA he was even around. In addition, this is one of the things I really love about the wedding photos he took for us: they do not feel posed or stiff, and they all have this really natural feel to them because he really just captured these moments as they happened. One of my favorite before-ceremony photos is of my best friend pinning on my boutonniere... I had no idea Ken was there and had taken this picture, and part of the reason I love it so much is because it really just captures that moment: when I look at it, I dont just think of that moment when we posed for the photographer
I remember that *actual moment* in time before the wedding. And thats really what you want from your photographs: you want them to remind you of those little moments from your wedding, not moments where you posed for the photographer.
When we did want him to take a specific photo of us, he was never far away and always easy to find. Taking photos with him was very painless: he could set up and frame the photo, snap a few different pictures (sometimes switching between cameras), and be done in a matter of seconds. This is something that people (including ourselves!) do not really consider when considering different photographers but it is actually very important: your wedding day really flies by and you do not want to spend hours of that precious time posing and setting up for photographs instead of experiencing and enjoying it. It really takes talent and a lot of experience and knowledge to be able to set up, frame, and take a bunch of pictures so quickly and still result in such beautiful-looking photos.
One of the final things about Ken that is really important is that YOU own the rights to the pictures. Many wedding photographers actually retain the copyrights to the photos they take of YOU and YOUR wedding
but, with Ken, YOU own your wedding photos: you get a DVD with all of your (full resolution) photos on them and you can post all the photos you want on Facebook or do anything else that you want with them.
All in all: working with Ken was an absolute pleasure, he took amazing photographs, and he caught these beautiful little moments that really captured the feelings and experiences of our wedding day. I cannot recommend him enough, and we are immensely glad that we hired him!
