Jeff just installed a screen/storm door on our porch today. His professional quality of workmanship and fair price has no comparison. Jeff fit us into his busy schedule on short notice and arrived when he said he would. The door opening was partially blocked by rail posts but Jeff was still able to install the door and maintain his original quote. We are already planning 2 more projects for Jeff, one this summer and a larger project later in the year. His company , Premier Remodeling, will be our go to company for our future projects. I am very pleased with working with LCM Contracting. Matt was very responsive throughout the entire process which I am so appreciative of. He was quick to come over and review the project and send me an estimate as well as answer questions. This project was for replacing outside porch posts and he kept me updated on when they would come as the weather was not cooperating (heavy rain for several days). They were prompt on arriving when they said they would and got the new posts installed and I’m thrilled knowing an old 100+ year old side porch has new steady support! I would use LCM again and appreciate their timely communication and thoroughness on the job.

We wanted a 10' picnic table for an outside screened porch at the coast. After finding Norm on the internet and seeing other tables that he had built, we decided on a stained gray 10' table with 4 side & 2 end benches that could be pushed underneath when not in use and not take up as much room on the porch. It was a great solution for replacing 3 mismatched white plastic round tables and chairs that were always dirty and mildewy. Now we have a good looking, very functional, sturdy table to accommodate our family and neighborhood cookouts and can seat 14!! Norm was great to work with and very responsive!! He finished the table in record time, delivered it and was quick to respond and resolve a minor adjustment! We would definitely use him again and recommend him to our friends!

Dave Olson Builders, Dave was professional and put his teams years of experience to use with a complete roof tear off of a house build in 1929. He explain each and every step throughout the process. He set dates and timelines for the roofing and meet every one. We also, added a second project to replace a upper level apartment unit stairs. They did a complete project from recommending solutions to working around access to the apartment. Again! finished on time and exceed your requirements with a truly delightful stairway with a porch (strong and sturdy) while functional all around. Thank you Dave it was truly and great experience and we would recommend you to all of friends and look forward to doing business in the future. Becki & Cliff

Peter painted my downstairs living room, stairway and kitchen. That involved lots of patching cracks which he did beautifully while negotiating the unsolicited help of three cats and two labradors. He also installed the most beautiful tile backsplash in the kitchen - cheerfully helping me as I wove totally undecidedly between colors and tiles. I am so impressed with Peter's work that he is going to come back to complete an outside deck area and there are plans in the air for his help in designing and building an addition to a family cabin. You can not go wrong hiring Peter.

After four interviews with builders, Jeff and P.R.I.D.E. was selected to build a deck at my rental property. He was the first to respond, his quote was reasonable, and I was impressed with not only his knowledge but his attentiveness to my suggestions and concerns. The workmanship of the deck is precise and of the highest quality imaginable, going beyond initial expectations. He even repaired a shed with faulty construction done by another builder. The second job is a complete remodel of a garage door entrance; again with expert dedication and workmanship. Thank you Thumbtack for your great service and for this referral and thank you P.R.I.D.E for your excellent work. I have other projects and won't have to think twice about who to hire.

Very happy with the way the deck turned out, and pricing was very competitive. Accommodated some changes along the way as we gained a better understanding of what we wanted. One of the supplier provided railing parts was wrong and this caused some delay, but that was not the fault of the contractor.

CJ building built my deck for me. He did an amazing job! Very reasonably priced also. The only thing I would do different is have the deck bigger.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
