We had a quite complex electrical problem in our new home, Lyndell took the time to thoroughly troubleshoot the issues and got everything working again properly in a short amount of time and charged a very reasonable price for the work performed. Will definitely call him for next years projects.

Martin was laid back and easy to work with. He installed vynal siding on our garage that had come with the house when we bought it. The previous owner never put it up. Unfortunately, an important piece was missing that we were unaware of so Martin put in an order for it so that it would match. He and his crew were able to install everything except the one wall that needed the missing piece. So we had one wall not don't for about 2 weeks, until the piece arrived and we were able to schedule a time for Martin to come back out and finish the job. Not a big deal, he was able to trim in the door and windows to make up for lost time and we couldn't be happier. We also have a bunch of mature hostas and other plants around the garage and Martin and his crew were very careful, nothing was damaged it's like they weren't even there. Good guy, with an honest upfront price. Would recommend.

Amir picked up a messy, half finished design job which the previous architect had left un-done. He reviewed and finished this conversion of a store front to an apartment. It was challenging in that the commercial zoning regulations had to be addressed, state of Wisconsin variances obtained and more. This is a 1920s building and there were complex code and fire regulations that had to be resolved in a economical fashion. We also had issues finding builders which extended the job out for over a year - Amir stuck with us and is seeing the project through. We are very satisfied with his work.

Ben from Jay Charles was able to come right out and took care of several issues we were having with leaking faucets/toilets immediately. Both Nic and Ben are professional, kind and very responsive. I will be using Jay Charles in the future for other home projects and repairs.

We had just purchased a house which was in much need of a face lift. I called on Kristy to give me some advise. She came right over and asked me what I was looking for. I gave her my thoughts and she ran with it, making my house a home. Love her work and her knowledge. I will definitely have her again and again! Jann

My husband & I had 5 different tilers come to take a look at our floor. Out of the five we bought it down to 2 and then when with Joe/Native Remodels - We have a older (1963) home with many obstacles- Radiant heat/pocket doors/side bathroom, plus we were having 3 rooms that flowed into each other done (650 sq.ft.) They said it would take 6 days - And it did - They did all the tear out and disposal. They worked on saving our existing molding. My tile is beautiful and straight. They were very easy to talk too. Made sure my cat did not get outside. Worked around me, since I work out of the home. Installed a kitchen light for me. Fixed a loose tile on our foyer entrance. The price was overly fair. Very pleased with the work & professional manner. Will be hiring them in the future to remodel our master bath. 1 project at a time. Brigette Begos

Stonehenge contractors do terrific work for a very reasonable rate. Rory James & his team perform in a professional manner and their work is 1st class. They did a kitchen/breakfast room remodel for us that first involved the demo (removing all the old tile and cabinets), and then installed new tile, cabinets, dishwasher, some plumbing rework for a multiple sink design and then face brickwork installation behind our industrial kitchen stove. The job turned out better than we imagined and in less time than expected. Rory also installed a temporary kitchen counter-top and small sink so we have a functional kitchen until the granite counter-tops come in a few weeks. At that time Rory will come back to hook up the permanent sinks and install the back-splash tile. We will definitely use Stonehenge again when we remodel the master bathroom and also recommend them to anyone that is doing any type of home remodel/improvement project. John & Bonnie C. I have heard 'bounce is code'. Which means a floor may feel solid and be built to code but still moves as it is walked on. I have been in several of ABC's custom built homes and NEVER felt the floors flex. Even after they are 20 years old. It is great to know a well built home can be purchased from the guy who actually built it.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
