FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Lower pitch roofs 6/12 and lower. I charge $50 per sq.ft. for one layer asphalt removal. $30 is added on to the $50 for each additional sq.ft. of asphalt shingle on top of the first layer. I charge $50 to apply the shingle every sq.ft.. On these 6/12 pitches and lower, the price may increase as much as $20 per sq.ft., depending on the number of extra designs. (like hips, dormers, runners, tin walls, and valley.) The more designs the more labor and the higher the rate per sq. ft. For pitches that are 7/12 and steeper. I charge $80 per sq.ft. for one layer removal. Again an extra $30 added to the $80 for each additional layer of asphalt shingle that is needed to be removed. I charge $80 also for shingle application per sq.ft.. Again my rate can increase as much as $50 per sq.ft. added on to the simple design rate $80 per sq.ft. This increase would be added to each the removal rate and also to the shingle application rate. The $50 per sq.ft. rate increase applies to both the $80 per sq.ft. to either the removal or installation of shingles. The increase price to the $80 per sq.ft. rate vary on how many designs, how many stories the roof is high, and how steep the pitch of the roof. These all affect how difficult the job is and how high my rate increases. I charge between $175-$350 for new chimney flashing depending on size and how difficult. Adding vents $15 each Removing vents $30 each Gutters I charge between $1.50-$3 per feet of gutter I install. I charge $25/hr on fascia, esophagus, and wood replacement work. I commonly charge hourly but rate could vary slightly based on difficulty.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
My former employer kept us up to date with new techniques and materials. He would invite us (his employees) to his house for meetings with manufacture managers. The managers from the shingle and material manufacture kept us up to date with new materials and went over instructions of all their different types of shingles and material. The manufacture needed to get information of our opinions of their materials. We worked together with the salesman to get the home owner thought of their material and the installer's thoughts and opinion.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I fell in love with the challenge and opportunity it gave me at a young age. My new Brother-In-Law invited me to work and teach me roofing the summer I graduated. (1998) I enjoyed being constructive and active. Plus the pros and cons of college or starting a career early, rather than trying college and not liking it and paying tuition.
