Hugo and his team were awesome!! We got a quote on Tuesday, project was started Friday and was complete on Saturday. We couldn't be happier with our yard! Hugo is a busy guy, but he made time for our project at the peak of summer when other landscapers were booking for the fall. Hugo was very responsive to my questions/concerns, his work was beautiful and of high quality, and he is very down-to-earth. We would highly recommend Hugo and his team!!

Evan is a professional, with great customer service! He confirmed that he would be coming out to mow the lawn the night before, and that afternoon. Double bonus- he showed up at the time he said he would. My lawn looks good!

Linda is great! I know nothing about plants and she was so helpful. She assessed my landscape and measured. Soon after she scheduled a time to come back to my home with her ideas of plants to use in a personal board on Pinterest which I thought was great! I didn't have to do any research. Not only is she awesome at what she does she is extremely reasonably priced! I will definitely call her again for more landscaping as well as maintenance.

Working with David was wonderful, jet greatest Landscaper Designer I believe! They where easy to work with, they did a great job on a forest clean out that I had on my backyard and made new beds with fresh premium mulch, but also integrating my own plants , Just waiting on few plants until it gets warmer. These guys are the hardest working landscapers I’ve employed. They know what they’re doing, they don’t rush things and they do a very good job. So far they have completed the Spring cleanup, edges about 1/2 acre of trees and flowerbeds, as well as deliver & install some high quality mulch.

Had Pedrozas do a Spring Clean up in my yard, both front and back. The yard looks better than it has in years. They did a great job thatching the lawn, trimming bushes and plants, edging, clearing out leaves in the flower beds, and spreading some mulch. I will use them again and recommend them to others.

Martin was one of the only landscapers who got back to me right away and even though the project was more intense than expected, he worked extra hard to get the job done same day. I was very impressed with the results of my lawn and will definitely use his services again.

Campus Labor did a fabulous job these past 2 years I have been using them. They did so great that I have recommended them to many of my friends and neighbors both at my Minnesota house and my Wisconsin vacation home. I am really happy that I chose them after all my hours of research and I am really happy to have had so many of my friends and neighbors thank me for having recommended such a wonderful company as well. I was very surprised to have found that these gentleman did such a great job while costing so little. I thought I was just helping out some great Christian young people to get a start in life but found that they did as great of a job as my old landscaper did who had been in business for 35 years and charge 10x more per hour. I will be going with them again this fall and next Spring for even more renovations I want to do to my yard. Thanks again guys. You rock !!!

Bardos did a huge project for us - we extended our paver patio and also put a 5 foot high, 60 foot long retaining wall at the back of our property. The retaining wall was set ten feet from the existing rail road tie wall- he removed that and then filled the entire 60 foot x 10 foot area with soil to 5 feet high. We have a fence in the back so he moved all the stone and soil by wheelbarrow from the front yard and then through a gate. I am extremely impressed with not only the quality of work, but his professionalism and work ethic. It turned out better than I could have imagined, I am so impressed! You can tell he takes pride in his work and a job well done. He never had a problem with changes or add-ons that we requested (he moved and modified an existing sump pump pipe, cut down a tree, etc). Not only that, he was reasonably priced. I highly recommend him for any landscaping or hardscaping job!

I was listing our house to sell, and needed to quickly trench out our sump pump that was draining onto our front lawn. I must have called 15 places for quotes. Leo responded immediately and stopped by within the hour to quote it, and came back the next morning to start the project. Leo got the job done with his son very quickly and made it look amazing. You can't even tell that they dug the grass up. He even pulled weeds in the area that wasn't part of the scope of the project.... Overall extremely friendly, very fast, fair price, and quality work. I will definitely be using them again for landscaping around our new home.

There team came in and remodeled my kitchen. I loved it. They were polite , punctual, kept me informed of budget and timeline, and cleaned up every day! I'm hiring them again this spring to redesign my landscaping. I highly recommend this company. They are a little more expensive but we'll worth it!

I contacted Matt of MGB Landscaping & Grading through Thumbtack. I am an Electrical Contractor and I was installing a new and upgraded electrical service to a farm. I needed to have Matt give me a price to trench from the new service location to two other areas on the farm that also needed new power. After agreeing to Matts terms Matt and his crew showed up on time and got right to work. immediately we discovered that this was going to be more difficult than we thought. Every foot of trench we had to stop and dig out huge rocks. Since we had over 100' more to go we all new this was going to be a long day. Everyone on Matts team worked hard and got the trench dug to the required depth. I also hired Matt and his crew to trench another job for me about thirty days later. This was a much larger job but with better soil conditions. I would definitely recommend M.G.B. Landscaping and Grading!

Chris, the landscaper who did the quote was on-site and active every day there was work being done. This was a nice touch as I knew that my vision was not going to be miscommunicated to another team. Each day they were on site, they worked without reservation. All team members seemed to have a strong work ethic as well as the customer's needs as first priority. The project was more work than I could do and Wisconsin Property Services stepped up and did a high quality job. **Work done on .3 acre yard: 6 french drains (2 under walkway), clearing of acidic pine topsoil, aerating, machine grading soil, overseed, and hydroseed.**

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
