Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does landscaping cost per square foot?

The cost of landscaping can vary widely based on the type of plants you wish to have, the amount of grading required, the condition of the land before work begins, and other factors. Adding in designer or high-end landscaping, as well as hardscaping such as sidewalks, walls, or patios will add to the cost. To find out how much your landscaping will cost, contact landscapers near you.

Is hiring a landscaper worth it?

A landscaper is worth it if you don't want to invest a significant amount of time and effort into planting, trimming, raking, weeding and performing other operations on your garden or yard. Hiring a landscaper to perform regular maintenance in your yards and complete bigger projects is valuable if you’re looking to sell your house. A professional landscaper can make your house more appealing to potential buyers.

Some landscapers may perform maintenance duties — remove leaves, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, etc. —  but they can also help you bring bigger projects to life. This may include adding a misting system, an outdoor fireplace, water features, artificial turf, a patio and much more.

Start contacting landscapers near you to get free estimates and start planning your project today.

How much does landscaping cost?

The price of landscaping varies widely due to the range of choices that can be made, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $320 and $20,000 for your landscaping work. The national average cost for a landscaping project is $2,600.

Factors like the choice of plants, the amount and type of hardscaping, the square footage of your landscaped area, and the region you live in will have a significant effect on your landscaping cost.

Where can you buy landscaping rocks?

You can shop for landscaping rocks from a variety of different sources. The first option is large chain retail stores specializing in home improvement and gardening. Often, landscaping rocks like slate and other slabs arrive on pallets and are sold in bulk, giving you a great deal. Your local landscaping store also carries rocks, and you may even have a stone or quarry seller nearby who can sell you the rocks you need. When in doubt, contact landscaping companies near you to see if they have rocks you can purchase.

What is landscaping?

Landscaping is the intentional placement and maintenance of living plants on an area of land or in your yard. This can include trees, lawn, flowers, bushes and other plant life and often incorporates mulch and other organic matter. The primary purpose of landscaping is to provide beauty to the house or building it surrounds.

Many landscaping companies also offer design, architecture and construction services. For example, they can help you design a yard that incorporates a patio, deck, pool, fire pit, lighting, walkways, retaining walls and more.

How much does landscaping improve home value?

Landscaping your property can boost the value of your home between 5% and 15%, according to Better Homes & Gardens. They specify that this is the amount of value added when you upgrade the condition of your landscaping from poor to good, though these terms are subjective.

What is landscape design?

Landscaping design refers to the art of analyzing an existing landscape, planning how to transform it through flora and fauna design and working with a client to ensure goals are met. Landscape designers may completely transform an outdoor space or make minor modifications to enhance it. They may also call for grading and the construction of hardscaping surfaces like walkways or patios to add to the enjoyment of the space.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Hugo and team were awesome! We purchased a new shed and wanted to landscape the area to control washout and finish the look. It is sitting on a slope, so this was a concern. We provided some photos on our vision, but with Hugo’s expertise and knowledge he really ensured that the finish work would do the job. Highly recommend and very satisfied with Landscaping Image!!!

Excellent! Veterans Landscaping came on the designated day and did a great job. They're also servicing a neighbor's house. I've hired them to also spray a weed killer next time they're here. I highly recommend them! Damp was very professional and friendly!

Our front landscaping had random plants, extra mulch and dirt, and a lot of ground cover. It looked completely unorganized and wasn’t a pretty site. We wanted a clean look and Landscaping Image LLC gave us a lot of options and advice to go off of, as well as finishing the job in a day and only a few days after talking with them! I knew they were busy but they made time for our project which we really appreciated, and it was an extremely reasonable cost for the work done. I’m super grateful we found them instead of going with someone else. They’re extremely personable and helpful and really want to help bring your vision to life! 100% recommend hiring them for your next project!

I was so nervous finding a landscaper, the industry seems very hard to navigate and come away with good work at a reasonable price. Well, Mario and his team certainly delivered on both. Mario gave a great quote, and when his team showed up they worked HARD and somehow got the job done in 1 day. In one day they: -created firepit area (remove grass, add tarp, edge and fill in with stone) -changed side of house to maintenance free landscape (removed grass, weeds, and shrubs, add tarp and stone) -Removed large shrubs -Removed grape vines from fence -Trimmed bushes and removed weeds along driveway -Weeded, trimmed and created new edge for front of house. Put in new tarp and mulch. It looked so good after that within 30 minutes of them leaving my neighbors came over asking for Mario's phone number. I am THRILLED with the work and will use them again if needed!

Working with Hugo was an extremely pleasant and stress-free experience. For years, in front of my house, I have had huge patches of damaged grass and because of the shade, nothing would grow. Hugo was very knowledgeable and explained to me exactly what was needed to be done and what would work best in my situation. Because of him, my lawn looks awesome! His rates are outstanding and are very reasonable. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone looking to get new sod or seeking any landscaping needs. His friendly and professional demeanor makes working with him a pleasure!

Hugo and his Landscaping Image LLC team did a fabulous job with our project. We had them replace the existing sod in our front lawn and terrace. The job included several complicated cuts around existing flower beds and landscaped plots. Several things stood out from our experience. (1) He is the only contractor who gave us price estimates per square foot as part of his very first response to our inquiry. Very nice touch. (2) He was the first contractor on Thumbtack to respond - and made arrangements to come to our house the very next day to view the job. (3) He provided meticulous details about how he and his team would do the job - including how the old soil and roots would be removed and fresh topsoil added before the new sod was installed. (4) He said the new Kentucky Bluegrass sod company he now uses for his jobs is free of weeds and pests, which was occasionally a problem with the previous companies he worked with. (5) He and his team started the job the very next day - and completed everything in two days. (6) Throughout the project, Hugo kept in communication with us via text message which was very much appreciated. The quality of the work is excellent and we are very happy with the results. Several of our neighbors stopped by as they were finishing the project, commenting on the beautiful color of the new sod and the quality of the work. Two asked us for the name of the company. The only suggestion we might have for Hugo and his team would be to clean up at the end of each work day. They did this very well on the last day, but things were quite messy at the end of the first day after they left. While this is certainly understandable, it just would have been nice for them to tidy up before leaving each day. Overall, however, this was a 10/10 experience for us. We would highly recommend Hugo and his team to anyone looking for sod replacement services.

2 stars for his crew and price. On a positive note Kyle was initially friendly, he gave the lowest quote, very good price for sod in both the front and back lawns. His crew was professional and pleasant the entire time. Kyle on the other hand was very short, and at times extremely rude. To start, his crew stripped out the existing lawn, first in the front yard then in back. Then laid the sod in back yard only. The back lawn was very nice and done extremely fast! I was amazed, and all was going well. However, the front lawn sat for about 3 weeks thru rain storms and heat waves. Just gross soppy mud everywhere, all over the drive way. All sorts of flies, mosquitos and critters were making themselves at home and feasting on us as we ran by, it was a daily obstacle course with two kids to get in and out of our cars and to the house for 3 weeks, which was not a big deal for me - As long as the end result would be a nice lawn. Meanwhile the sod was laying on our cement driveway through all of this from day 1, at this point completely yellowish brown. Via email, he explained he would return to lay the sod before it went bad, which he did. The state and look of the lawn concerned me. There was very little top soil used in the front, the land was very bumpy with lots of grooves an indents which we discussed flattening during our initial meeting. He explained they ran out of topsoil, and assured me they would return to add more under the sod, they just needed to get the sod laid before it rotted, but would have to wait until after the rain- he did about 2 weeks later over a couple applications. By this time the grass looked as if it been thru hell and back!! Sitting in the driveway in the sun for weeks, laid down then ripped back up, nothing like the back yard which was beautiful, with the exception of 2 strips of half rolled out sod. I guess he expected me to cut it? I emailed him pictures of rolls left behind mid roll, which made me think they were still returning -so I asked. His reply- questioning what I wanted him to do, the meaning of the picture, and advised that I can simply cut it, which I did and left it at that. Now, he did leave me with instructions via email to water everyday which we did, sprinklers were going in both yards everyday, with even the grandparents coming by to water, back yard was good but the front yard NEVER looked alive. It honestly looked like dead grass while it was sitting in the driveway before it was ever laid! I was hoping he would show up for a scheduled meeting we made, so I could at least show him how awful it looked, but he never made it. He reassured me with enough watering it would take, and I trusted his knowledge. In the end, the front yard died. This was the summer of 2019, 2020 I’m looking to replace his work. I have multiple patches of no grass whatsoever, and what looks to be clay mixed soil with rocks laid down as top soil they used, and weeds. I did try to address this issue with him via email, he advised I continue to water extensively. I reassured him I never stopped, and questioned why the back looked entirely different from the start, with equal waterings? Just really wanting any advice he could give to help save the lawn. I’m not sure what his problem was or if that questioned offended his livelihood, but he decided to respond with “I’m not going to repeat myself.” All communication was via email, I don’t believe he ever saw the final product and if he did he never let me know he did. His solution, of course in not so many words was water, water, water, and he will not repeat himself if the final product is dead grass. According to another landscaper we are now consulting with, they took much too long to lay the sod, used inappropriate sod type for the amount of shade/lack of sun in the front, and most importantly inadequate amount and quality of top soil used. His dismissive attitude and rude emails didn’t help resolve this matter.
