About
Jason is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma School of Music (BMA) and the University of California, Santa Barbara (MA), where he is currently a PhD candidate in ethnomusicology. He has studied music from Ireland, Scotland, India, Indonesia, the Middle East, West Africa, and North America and performed with various ensembles at venues from Nordic Fest in Decorah, IA to Egypt’s famed Cairo Opera House. Jason has been an active Irish fiddler for the last two decades and is currently working to preserve the multiethnic old-time music of Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest, teaching and performing with his band, the Lakeside Ramblers, running a jam in the Milwaukee area, and serving on the board of directors for Folklore Village in Dodgeville, WI. He is also the recipient of an American-Scandinavian Foundation Folk Arts and Cultural Traditions Fellowship to produce a book and recording of the music of Wisconsin fiddler Otto Rindlisbacher. As a teacher, Jason draws on pedagogical traditions from around the world and puts a special focus on issues of tuning and temperament often neglected in string teaching. Students can expect individually tailored instruction, high attention to detail, and the development of fundamental skills and the principles of effective musicianship.

Jason was absolutely wonderful to work with! He was always quick to respond and his music made an excellent addition to the evening. We hired him as a strolling violinist for a dinner event and he was a hit! I would highly recommend him to help make any party or event extra special.

Jason was my first fiddle-specific teacher. When I was an undergrad in a music appreciation class he was TAing, I asked if he would give me private lessons and he said yes. I know Jason was already very busy with graduate work as well as TAing, so he really went out of his way to help me out of a love for fiddle and for teaching.
Jason was an excellent and patient instructor able to tailor his teaching to someone without formal musical training. He met me weekly and let me record videos of the tunes he taught me on my phone. He even let me sit in and play some tunes with his band on occasion. Without Jason's instruction, I wouldn't be where I am today with my music 10 years down the road. I highly recommend him as a fiddle teacher for any level of student!

FAQs
What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Please take the estimated hourly prices on my profile with a grain of of salt. There area lot of things that going into providing a quote that's fair for both parties, including the amount of playing time, the repertoire being played (anyhow much work that will require to prepare), travel time/gas, and the nature of the event. If you're ever unsure of a quote I give, I will be more than happy to explain how I got to a given number and listen to any counterpoints you may have. My goal is to provide the best musical experience possible for a price everyone is happy with.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I will probably start with asking you to tell me more about your event and what you're looking for from me. As we figure out how I can best accommodate you, I will also work with you to find the best musical options and approaches for your event. I can, of course, also provide recordings of my own playing so you can make your own decisions about what I'm suggesting.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started teaching music lessons over fifteen years ago, in college, and performing for weddings not long after.
