Melvin was amazing. He was very responsive and helped us get all the paperwork in place for our condo association last minute. On moving day the movers showed up 10-minutes early and packed everything up very efficiently. I couldn't have asked for things to have gone smoother!

I had some challenges with this company before during and after. I told myself I wouldnt write a review because they sent someone out and tried to resolve the issues but I found the screws to my six month old's crib laying in the bed with the baby and I'm pissed. Some of my other issues: 1. Movers left packing materials all over my old place. 2. They changed my moving time the day before. I'm schedule for 1pm, I get s call the pay before saying my move is at 9. We comprise and settle for 12. Movers show up at 11. 3. Despite getting an estimate and hiring 3 movers.. only 2 show up and I'm way over the estimate. 4. My daughters crib was installed backwards. They dissembled it so you'd figure they put it back properly. I recently found a screw from the crib in my daughters bed!! Oh and the side panels are so loose. My guess is they were broken during the move because the crib was new. My bed was also dissembled by them and not put back together property. -guy comes out to fit it leaves out a screw. Overall I wouldn't hired them for anything.

After hearing several estimates I chose Chicagoland Moving and Storage, Inc. for my move from Chicago to Pittsburgh. I am happy to report that I was completely satisfied with every aspect of their service and can give them my highest recommendation. First Contact - I spoke with Kristen over the phone who was cheerful and helpful in scheduling an estimate. Throughout the move she would serve as my primary contact and was extremely helpful and responsive. Estimate - The estimator was on time and very thorough, asking thoughtful questions as I guided him through my apartment. He made a competitive offer and made it clear that there was room to negotiate if necessary. He was very flexible with storage costs. Pick Up - Tito and his crew were on time and quickly got to work. He was extremely thorough in inventorying and packing my larger items personally before having them sent down to the truck. I was very pleased with how my things were handled. Delivery - Kristen was extremely flexible in scheduling a delivery date and the crew was on time and very efficient despite driving over eight hours. All of my things arrived in good condition and I haven't yet detected any damages or lost articles.

I had two very difficult apartments to move out of and into - a 2nd floor walk up in Chicago with a very narrow, spiral staircase, and a 4th floor walk up in NYC with very little street parking available. The movers never blamed me for the challenge either apartment presented, but conducted their work swiftly and professionally. My furniture and boxes were out of the first apartment in an hour, and made it to my new apartment in just three days despite terrible weather across the entire Northeast. During the move-in, the movers could not find any street parking within 75 feet (poor guys!), which only meant I had to pay an extra 75$ fee, which I was already made aware of as a possibility in the estimate, and the foreman handled the situation courteously and professionally. Because of the massive distance the guys had to cover from truck to apartment on this end, the move took a little over two hours, but it was no less impressive! All of my furniture was completely undamaged and the only broken thing was a bowl that I personally had failed to pack securely. I paid exactly what the estimate predicted (minus the 75 feet distance fee) and was overall pleased with the communication and process. My moving coordinator went through the estimate with me in detail beforehand, explaining certain fees that applied to my situation (in my case, both cities required shuttles (rather than large semis) on city streets so there was a fee to transfer my stuff off of/onto smaller vehicles, there was also a small fee for the flights of stairs at each location, but this was minimal). I had to add a few items of furniture three days before the move, and my coordinator drafted a new estimate for me painlessly and easily despite the last minute notice (I believe you're allowed up to 2 business days before the move to make changes). This company provided me with one of the most decently priced estimates after I had been dealing with other, larger companies that were asking for $8000 for a move that STI did for just over $2000. I highly, highly recommend their service.

I was very pleased with the movers I hired. They arrived on time and were very friendly. They politely worked as they had to carry heavy furniture and boxes up three flights of stairs on a hot summer day. They turned a difficult situation for me into a positive experience. I would definitely hire again and recommend to everyone. The owner was very prompt in responding to my messages as well.

This is a newer company with mixed reviews but I decided to give them a chance and I'm very happy that I did. They were a little late, which was fine because I still had last minute things to do. But when they arrived, they got right to work and moved very quickly. I had 1 truck load of furniture and the entire move was completed in a little less than 2 hours. Both of the movers were friendly and went above and beyond by moving a few things that I hadn't listed to be moved. I would recommend this company and give them a chance.

I heard a lot about ABC moving systems from one of my cousins. So, I took their number from him and called for a quote. The sales rep offered me the best possible price and booked my move according to my preferred date. Their movers showed up on time at the moving day, wrapped and boxed everything and completed the move within the allotted time. I checked the inventory and did not find anything missing or broken. In other words, they were able to fulfill all my demands and within a very moderate amount.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
