We had a great experience! We needed a variety of odds and ends done around the house including lighting, fixing toilets issues, building a patio set and gas fire pit. We will use him again for building our deck.

Lyndell did an outstanding job on our powder room. He came to our home to give us an estimate. He told what exactly needed to be done. He showed me the area needing repairs. Other companies expanded the area of repair in their estimates. He worked tirelessly on the project. The powder room looks like no work was ever done. Excellent. I highly recommend Lyndell's Home Remodel and Repair.

Martin was laid back and easy to work with. He installed vynal siding on our garage that had come with the house when we bought it. The previous owner never put it up. Unfortunately, an important piece was missing that we were unaware of so Martin put in an order for it so that it would match. He and his crew were able to install everything except the one wall that needed the missing piece. So we had one wall not don't for about 2 weeks, until the piece arrived and we were able to schedule a time for Martin to come back out and finish the job. Not a big deal, he was able to trim in the door and windows to make up for lost time and we couldn't be happier. We also have a bunch of mature hostas and other plants around the garage and Martin and his crew were very careful, nothing was damaged it's like they weren't even there. Good guy, with an honest upfront price. Would recommend.

Amir picked up a messy, half finished design job which the previous architect had left un-done. He reviewed and finished this conversion of a store front to an apartment. It was challenging in that the commercial zoning regulations had to be addressed, state of Wisconsin variances obtained and more. This is a 1920s building and there were complex code and fire regulations that had to be resolved in a economical fashion. We also had issues finding builders which extended the job out for over a year - Amir stuck with us and is seeing the project through. We are very satisfied with his work.

I asked Roman to evaluate some structural questions in the home I recently purchased. I wanted him to put my mind at ease about integrity concerns and to assess the load bearing nature of a wall for an intended kitchen renovation. He and I quickly agreed to a time and price for his work and he was onsite the following day. Roman was punctual, gave honest straightforward answers and provided signed documentation supporting his review. He was a pleasure to work with and I would recommend him to anyone looking for similar help. -Eric

Chris designed our house and pole barn attachment. He has been readily available throughout the entire processes answering all our questions thoroughly. He has been patient with my husband and I as we tried to make mutual decisions. He has also been in contact with us during the building process. The house and pole barn aren't finished yet but I'm excited to see the final product.

Stonehenge contractors do terrific work for a very reasonable rate. Rory James & his team perform in a professional manner and their work is 1st class. They did a kitchen/breakfast room remodel for us that first involved the demo (removing all the old tile and cabinets), and then installed new tile, cabinets, dishwasher, some plumbing rework for a multiple sink design and then face brickwork installation behind our industrial kitchen stove. The job turned out better than we imagined and in less time than expected. Rory also installed a temporary kitchen counter-top and small sink so we have a functional kitchen until the granite counter-tops come in a few weeks. At that time Rory will come back to hook up the permanent sinks and install the back-splash tile. We will definitely use Stonehenge again when we remodel the master bathroom and also recommend them to anyone that is doing any type of home remodel/improvement project. John & Bonnie C. Menorah Painting did excellent, high quality work, both outside and inside of our home. The painters arrived on the agreed date and time, worked diligently for full days until the work was completed. Their work areas were neat, and they cleaned up after they completed their assignment. They were totally reliable in every way. We would never hesitate to call them for work again.

On your five-star rating scale, if it were possible to give Michael Wood (Alchemy Construction) a seven or eight star rating, we would because we are so pleased with the work he did for us in transforming our carpeted staircase to a beautiful wood staircase. It was really a pleasure working with Mike, starting with our request for a quote. He promptly responded and immediately showed an eagerness to do the project and a willingness to negotiate a reasonable price. We were most appreciative of the process he proposed which included staining and applying polyurethane layers to the treads and pre-priming the risers at his shop instead of our home. This enabled him to demolish the old and install the newly stained treads and painted risers one or two steps at a time so we could still use the staircase during construction. It didn’t take long for us to see that Mike is an incredibly skilled and knowledgeable carpenter who takes tremendous pride in his work. We are totally pleased with the completed stair remodel he did for us and we would highly recommend Mike Wood for any construction project.

I just used Greenleaf developers to build an addition at the back of my house. I met with a lot of companies but ultimately chose Greenleaf developers because they were the most organized and affordably priced. They had everything picked out in no time and stayed within my budget. The crew got started on the date we agreed upon. I could not be happier with the finished product from the design to the craftsmanship! Thank you, Peter!

Robert was a pleasure to work with. He was very organized, responsive, and professional. His workers were on time, pleasant, and very patient with both our kids and dog throughout our reno. We added two bathrooms, updated another bath, refinished our flooring, installed new windows throughout, removed an existing wall to open up the floor plan, updated the majority of light fixtures, installed a new front door, painted throughout the home, wallpapered, new inner doors and hardware throughout, removed A LOT of wood paneling, and did tile work in the kitchen. Throughout all of this - Robert and his crew were great. Only minor issues came up - one being a stain color for a door that I didn't like and the other was that the flooring wasn't drying as quickly as to be expected. We would definitely use iRenovate again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
