Josh did a great job remodeling my entire bathroom, tile, shower, floor, trim, paint, vanity, lighting. Bathroom looks great, affordable quote with excellent communication/project management and a very fair price. I would recommend for bathroom tiling and paint, etc. I actually did all the demo, and it got too difficult for me to continue, Josh came in and knocked the project out the park.

Before I hired Weston I spent time to go see his work, let me just say; he is one of the best designers in this area and maybe in this country. I love what he did to my home, no one designs like him, and his design process is extraordinary – Wow! Is all I can think to say -- there is nothing like what he does even on the internet. Jane V.

Amir was extremely responsive and knowledgeable in his designs and suggestions. It was a pleasure working with him and he is now designing a home for my son and his wife. Amir has been very forthright in telling me where any additional design work is needed outside the scope of normal architectural design. This has eliminated confusion and made for a smoothly working project.

Tom has completed many types of projects for me over the recent years. Small handyman things like installing fans, water heater, blinds, wheelchair ramp, toilet change out, light fixture change out, common drain leak/stoppage repair. Large projects have included removal of walls to enlarge rooms, installing oak hardwood flooring removing vinyl/carpet, painting, drywall, ceramic tile to laundry and bathroom. He also landscaped my yard solving drainage problems and flooding by creating beautiful river rock raised shaped gardens. Tom has extensive life experience in home building, remodeling, and design. He has very creative ideas and can problelm solve challenging situations that come up in projects. He has great attention to detail. He shares his ideas to make the project special and individual, staying within my budget. My next project is remodeling the main bath: fixture update, tile and glass treatments. Then, additional hardwood flooring. Tom's gift is attention to detail, executing conceptual design, woodworking details. He has designed and built homes of all sizes, including a log home for me. I highly recommend him for ANY SIZE JOB. Small, or a large project. Not a fly by night tradesman!

I signed up for Angie's List for the first time on 10/26/2010 at about 2am and found Tim Bast on there under Bast Painting & Services and sent him an email telling him that my mom was looking to have some painting done after we stripped off the wallpaper and glue in her small bathroom. I told him she wanted the walls texturized with the sand in the paint or whatever they use for that and that she also needed some patchwork done from the previous painter's job from over 20 years ago that came off with the wallpaper in some places. I asked him to call my mom when he had a chance and he had already called her in the morning and scheduled an estimate at 11am the same day! Since it was extremely windy outside and he was in the middle of an outdoor painting job, he was able to fit her in the very next morning and was able to patch up the problem area, spray the texture on the wall, paint the entire bathroom, and also patched up the corners in the hallway and painted both walls for her. For such short notice, he did an incredible job for my mom and she will definitely use him again in the future. Thank you, Tim!

Annie was so easy to work with. She is both professional and down to earth. We hired her for a bathroom remodel. She helped us choose a color scheme, select tile, and find the perfect fixtures and vanity. We were very pleased with the results and wouldn’t hesitate to hire her again!

They fixed the leak and did a beautiful job of tileing the floor..We liked Bill and James work so much that we had them do the shower at our house. They did the shower floor and it looks great!! It was a pleasure to work with Jerrica on my recent guest bathroom remodel. The bath was outdated and not at all how I wanted my guests to view my home. I just had no clue on what to do with it. I didn't even really know what my style was exactly. I just knew what I didn't like. The bath needed new flooring, wall treatment, vanity, fixtures and shower tile. I enlisted Jerrica to design the room and from the beginning of the project, Jerrica was able to tune into my ideal aesthetic and make me comfortable with the design process. As a first-time customer of an interior designer, this was very important to me! Jerrica provided a 3D rendering of what my bathroom would look like. I was amazed at the transformation from outdated bath to luxurious spa! She worked within our budget to create an inspired space. She has a very keen sense of color. She had ideas that I would never have thought of doing. I am so happy (and proud) with the way the room looks now. I want to my own master bath now. I cannot wait to work with her again.

I am acquainted with Jenny at Bohemia through various connections in the past and present. Being a local artist has she sought me out to provide specific pieces for the needs of a client. It was clear that she knows her clients' tastes and works hard to find unique designs to meet their expectations. As a customer of her retail shop I am always presented with new and interesting home accessories, and appreciate Bohemia's focus on supporting local artists and craftspeople.

Lisa helped me to select new paint colors for every room in my home, she also helped me select a new stair runner, and she provided references to painters and other design professionals (reupholstery and window treatments). I worked with her for a number of years to complete the redecorating of our then 15 year old home, after we relocated here. I enjoy working with Lisa and would highly recommend her. She is very good with color, and I have not changed a single room color since I redecorated. Her paint selections all look great with our furnishings and gave our our home a very coordinated look.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

          • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
          • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
          • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
          • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

          How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

          • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
          • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
          • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
          • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
