Jim Bauer responded to my problem within minutes offering to come out and diagnose the issue with our furnace. He actually offered to come out that evening but I requested the next day. He came out and had us back up and running within minutes. We will 100% be using Jim Bauer for all of our heating, cooling and plumbing needs!

I had multiple plumbing fixes that included replacing washing machine water shut off valve, 2 faucet leaks. What appeared to be standard plumbing issues turned out to be more complicated. Leo was on time, effectively resolved all issues, and the work was reasonably priced.

He was very informative about my problem. He was inexpensive which is always nice. He solved one problem the dirt in the shower heads which we thought would solve the major problem but so far it hasn't. I appreciate his efforts and would hire him again for other plumbing problems.

Refreshing to meet a contractor who understands and uses technology. I used Dwayne to consult on the proper configuration for my sink & disposal. It gave me problems for years. He evaluated it and proposed new piping. It seems much better although I'm only on day one. Price was reasonable. Labor and parts was below $150. Wish I had done with the first problem! Expert advice is hard to get. Dwayne was the first to see that the pipe direction was wrong. Thank you.

I know Cliff and use his services for the last 10 years. As a single woman I periodically end up in disaster that needs emergency intervention. I always count on Cliff and I know he will do his possible best and super job. He did electrical job for my basement and garage, fixed plumbing and leakage in the bathroom, fixed number of kitchen and laundry room problems, compose furniture, assemble and put on shelves on the walls, completely replaced outdated and broken light pol on a front yard of my house. Besides great job and high quality to his work, he is an "old school" in his working ethics of discipline and responsibility. Rear quality in our days! I recommend him to my friends, family members and even my employer without any reservations and everybody were very satisfied. Hire Cliff you will get 5 star quality service! Irena C. (Whitehall)

We are remodeling an old farmhouse and trying to stay true to style and era of house. First hired AJS to build a pantry off our new kitchen. It turned out beautiful. Far exceeded our expectations. Adam consulted with us throughout the project, helped keep us on track design wise and was meticulous with all the details. So, we asked him to stay on and build a mud porch. It is even better than the pantry. Way to nice to use as a mud porch so my poor husband still has nowhere to drop off his tools and muddy shoes. Now Adam is on his 3rd project with us. In an upstairs bedroom he repaired water-damaged plaster and stress cracks, laid a lovely tile hearth, installed a mantel, built a closet and added crown moulding. Everything is so lovely. You meet with Adam for the initial consultation. We were concerned at first that he would sell us the job and then send other folks to do the work. That's not how he works. Occasionally he brings in helpers depending on what he plans to do that day, but he is personally on the job every day. You get his knowledge and expertise throughout your entire project. Adam is dependable, skilled and cares about the quality of his work. He told us when we first met with him that "he is not happy until the homeowner is happy". He has lived up to that promise every day.

Jarrett did in one long day what another plumber said would take 4 days. He roughed in a new bathroom, completely. Sanitary lines, vents and water lines. Its obvious he does extensive plumbing work, not only simple service calls (like many outfits). Will use again if needed. A+

Houzz did the very best job when building our new master bathroom. You could tell they had vast experience just by the way they conducted the process. We have now used them 3 additional times to build us a deck and they replaced the siding on our house. I even received 3 other bids and Houzz's bid was totally inline with the other bids I received.

The guys from Crystal Clear plumbing came to my house today to replace a leaky kitchen faucet. They arrived at the time I was told, were so polite and listened as I explained about the thumping noise the faucet was making, as well as the leak. First they discovered there were no shut off valves under the kitchen sink. They identified the noise due to too much pressure. Discovered the regulator wasn’t working correctly. They replaced it, and installed shut off valves and replaced the faucet, explained to me the problem gave me a cost rundown and quietly did their job. I would definitely use them again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
