FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
For new construction, I will bid the sq footage for one coat primer and two coats of paint. For repaints/remodel, I will typical bid for materials and labor. There are always tricky spots, under awnings, hard to reach areas, french doors, crown molding, the coverage of the new color over the old (some colors require 3-4 coats of paint to reach full hue) as well as number of surfaces and number of colors to be painted. While painting seems straight forward, there is much planning involved to preform the job efficiently in time and cost.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Absolutely. Sherwin Williams holds a contractors fair at least once a year where the leaders in paint and equipment show off the new tools and materials they have been developing. This might be new super paint, whose coverage allows a smooth final surface over hard, cracked and unwieldy surfaces, to the technology present in sprayers, roller pads and safety equipment.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Working as a carpenters apprenticeship in California I was exposed to the full range of new construction and remodeling processes. By far, the most enjoyable, laid back, meditative process is painting. There was nothing more pleasing then framing a house, hanging the dry wall, and after a few days of hard labor, grabbing the paint brushes and enjoying the zen state a nice cut line can bring.
