Introduction: The training program will focus on the overarching goal of teaching clients to become dog trainers. This means that clients will be expected to practice homework with their dogs during the week in between lessons.
We will concentrate on positive reinforcement with regard to operant conditioning. The effect of positive reinforcement is that the dog offers behaviors readily and willingly, and that these behaviors become intrinsic. We may also use other forms of operant conditioning, as dogs don't all learn the same way. When using other forms of conditioning, we will discuss the cause and effect as it relates to the dog with the goal of positive reinforcement as our end result.
The outcome of this training will be developing lasting and meaningful relationships between owners and their dogs. The owners will learn how to effectively communicate with their dog and to understand their dogs needs. The dogs will learn to trust their owner and to understand the nature of their working relationship. Furthermore, when working in a group class, we will define responsible dog ownership and how it pertains to building a responsible canine community.
I have been a professional dog trainer for seven years. I have a background in education and I taught sixth grade for eight years. I currently own two dogs (a thirteen year old Staffordshire bull terrier and a two year old Rottweiler). I have owned a border collie, a fox hound, and a Sharpei . I walked dogs professionally throughout college. At one time, I had seven dogs in my "pack" that I would walk at the same time ranging from a labradors, terriers, a golden retriever, to a samoyed, and a chow.
I decided to leave teaching sixth grade at Fort Belvoir ES as of 2015. My decision was based on the lack of time that I was able to spend with my daughters while teaching. I am excited that my new career allows me to help teach others how to successfully develop a relationship with their dog, increase awareness and responsibility with regard to animals, while being able to build a stronger canine community in a place that I live.
