FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first lesson involves working with the student to assess where they are vocally, and finding out what their goals are. The "assessment" just involves simple warm ups to find out the student's range, tone, breathing, and voice type. Then we discuss what type of music the student would like to focus on and choose 2-3 songs to focus on. Lessons after that consist of a warm-ups, which focus on technique, and then working on songs. If you are working towards IMEA, then the required scales and triads will be included in the warm-up section.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
As a singer I spent a year performing the role of Johanna in the Broadway National Tour of Sweeney Todd and traveled to over 50 countries while performing as a headliner in the “Show Room at Sea” for Holland America Line through Stiletto Entertainment. I have also performed for various regional theaters including two seasons with the Ohio Light Opera. During my years as a performer I have performed opera, musical theater, jazz, and pop. I'm also a winner of the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts in Miami, a finalist in the American Traditions Competition, and the winner of a full scholarship at the University of Illinois. My teaching experience includes 4 years as a children's choir director for two Methodist Churches, 6 months as a substitute teachers, and 2 years as a private instructor. I have a Bachelor's degree in Musical Theater from the University of Illinois which included extensive training in music theory, voice, acting, and dance.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I live in Champaign with my husband and son. Having a family means I can no longer do the amount of traveling necessary to be a full time performer! So I am pursuing my passion of teaching in hopes that I can help others achieve their dreams.
