I came to checkmate k9 with a pretty serious problem and an actual need to have a protection dog. I've done obedience with dogs before but never anything like this. I've now been with Checkmate for over a year and couldn't be happier or more impressed with not only the results I've gotten with my dog but with the community and people that come to this club. Seeing their growth personally as well as the progression in their dogs is part of what makes this great. Stevo has always been thorough in his explanation but also steps back when need be to allow you to learn through trial and error on your own which I think has been key to my success. I'm constantly learning new things getting better every week. This is by far the best training I personally think is out there.

Simpy put, Stevo is pawsome!!! My husband and I rescued our two small furbabies - an 11lb Maltipooranian (Fe) and a 13lb Chiminpin (Vernon) - from the streets of CA, and needless to say, they had horrible fear issues. Encountering strangers and other dogs, especially during daily walks, was a terrifying experience for the dogs and a really embarrassing experience for us. Ferocious lunging and barking would ensue every time we walked past other dogs or whenever strangers looked at them. Taking our own apartment building elevator wasn't even a possibility since they'd bark loudly whenever someone appeared on the other side of the doors. (At least we got plenty of exercise taking four flights of stairs multiple times a day!) So, sadly, we were one of *those* neighbors with the annoying dogs. We tried many different trainers, all of whom got amazing reviews, but the results from their training methods (mostly positive reinforcement) would be short-lived. One of them, who was probably the most "famous" of them all but shall remain nameless, even refused to listen to the important tidbits we'd give them about our dogs (i.e. they cannot be lead by leashes around their collars since they have collapsed tracheas and choke immediately, but she didn't believe us and insisted on trying it anyway). Stevo, on the other hand, always listened to us and would cater to our dogs' needs. He's not a one-trick pony and is flexible and adaptable. We first tried training without e-collars, but after so many trainers and no lasting success, we decided to let Stevo guide us on how to use e-collars properly. And boy, can we say that we did a 180 - we used to be completely against e-collars but now we are big proponents of them...as long as you work with a trainer and learn how to use them appropriately. When we discussed how many training sessions we might need, Stevo suggested a couple of his private + group packages. We were skeptical about group sessions since we had a lackluster experience with group sessions previously, but he explained that group sessions were more like mini-private sessions. Plus, our dogs would get more exposure to strangers and other dogs, which they really needed. The group sessions were indeed mini-private sessions, and our dogs greatly benefited from them. Stevo would have his other human students work with our dogs, too! He'd send us home with weekly homework and ask us to show him what we practiced at the next session. He was extremely patient with us as he fine-tuned our skills, and he was always available to us by text or facetime if we had questions between sessions. We're happy to say that Vernon and Fe are now considered some of the better canine citizens on the block. Our neighbors have noticed and commented on their progress, and we have more peaceful walks these days. We can walk past other dogs with mostly zero issues, or we can at least prevent any oncoming drama from starting with a simple command or squash the drama more quickly once it starts (usually from other dogs starting it nowadays - ha!). We can even take the elevator in our building! Vernon is 99.9% comfortable with strangers now (the 0.1% is understandable 'cause we're usually scared of the people he's scared of, too!), and Fe is much better as well. While she hasn't become as comfortable as her brother, she calms down around people much faster than she used to whenever we have guests over. We are very pleased with how far she's come. Our goal going into training with Stevo was to get the dogs to a place where they will listen to our commands 100% of the time so that we no longer need to use the e-collars. We're still working on this but are nearly there (note: it's our own fault - if we were more consistent post training with Stevo, we'd meet our goal much faster). We are ecstatic, and the dogs are more relaxed (and healthier as a result). Thank you, Stevo!!!!

Stevo is hands down the best trainer I have worked with. Whether you want to do field work or personal house calls for any type of dog - obedience or protection - he is a dog genius who will exceed your expectations with personal service.
