FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I have a really simple method: I estimate how long the project will take, then calculate my labor at $30/hr. Then I estimate the cost of materials required based on the design and my list of prices from local lumber yards, hardware stores, and paint distributors. Labor plus materials equals my quote to customers.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
1) Talk story and get a good idea of what they want (what type of furniture, what wood or color, what style/s of furniture they like, etc.). This usually is done over the phone. 2) Draw out a proposal design, and send this to the customer with a quote. 3) If the customer wants to proceed, then I would usually visit wherever the piece will go and get final dimensions and make a final drawing. 4) Once approved, get a down payment for materials, and get started. I usually deliver the finished piece within a few weeks.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
On the job training only, taught by my self and a few carpenter mentors. I have a masters in molecular bioscience, which helps with project and time management.
