Introduction: I am a classically-trained pianist, and a fountain of information; someone who can give you hours of background and detail on a Chopin piece, or the like, and knows what it takes to get to the point where you can pretty much play anything. I am also an autodidact and generally smart guy, and my situation is that I now make most of my living from tutoring the SAT, ACT, LSAT, tests, and general math and statistics, which, you guessed it, pays better than teaching piano. I didn't make it that way, but we do what we do. This puts me in a situation where I can choose to be selective about the students I take on. Classical piano, at it's higher levels, is one of the most difficult pursuits in the word, up there with ballet, theoretical math, and Olympic gymnastics. Most people don't reach that level, and many of those simply aren't inclined to try. My extensive training in the field, and general inclinations, make it a joy for me to talk about the high-level stuff, and teach the great works, but doesn't especially dispose me to wanting to teach Mary Had a Little Lamb to a 5-year-old ever again. So, if you're serious, or the parent of a child who you wish have serious piano training, I'm happy to offer my services. If you want someone who can teach very basic things to a beginner, and/or have no intent of serious study, you can probably find someone acceptable for a cheaper price. On the other hand, if you want the real deal, or your child has some background and wishes to go to the next level, I can offer a good chunk of what you might get from an established PhD, or high-level teacher in Manhattan, at a LOWER price than such people would ask. If you wish to use me for a limited number of sessions, simply to attain some fundamentals, get feedback, or assess and look for bad habits, that is certainly fine as well.

Erik has been my piano/guitar teacher for about 6 years and the experience has been excellent. His knowledge of instruments and music as well as his ability to teach made learning very simple and entertaining. He's always been patient with my brother and I and every lessons ends with us learning something new about music. I highly recommend him as a teacher.

Erik is an excellent piano teacher. He keeps my teenage son motivated. He teaches him the theory and suggests piano pieces that will encourage my son to practice.

Erik is a terrible communicator. For Father’s Day, I wanted to get my father guitar lessons. It was difficult planning the schedule but we were able to work it out. I’ve been trying to get in touch with him to pay him for my father’s lesson but he doesn’t reply to any phone calls or messages. (I called Sunday, texted Monday and I didn’t hear from him until the following Saturday.) I’m a professional musician, lived in Manhattan for 2 years doing my masters in music and freelancing, and now playing in a professional orchestra. I know how busy life can get, but if you can not communicate with your clients you have a long way to go.

Details: 45 - 64 years old • No, cannot read music • No formal training • Acoustic • What the teacher recommends • Yes, the student has an instrument • 60 minutes • Willing to work around teacher's schedule • Ready to hire the right teacher now • The guitar teacher travels to me

Erik DeGeorge's reply
So, after following up with this client...all I can say is that I stand by my work and the many students I've taught and continue to teach, and it's unfortunate I ran into someone like this who has now hurt my reputation and review score on this app. I hope the reviews from students with whom I have worked for years will carry more weight than this single experience, and that future reviews will show a return to a consistent trend of satisfaction among clients.
