Introduction: I teach group Rhythm & Percussion classes to children starting at age 5. The average class size is 5-6 students. This group class focuses on understanding rhythm naturally by using our senses and learning to listen to our bodies. Rhythm is a core element in the understanding and playing of music in general. My class, while teaching the kids basic drum stick technique, limb coordination, and dynamics , also provides each child with a solid foundation for future classes in music. I also teach theatre workshops and mini summer theatre camps. My drum classes are unique as they incorporate aspects of ensemble based theatre exercises that are rooted in the elements of Rhythm. My Storybook Theatre mini camps encourage reading as we adapt a children's picture book into a play, rehearse it and perform it on our final day of class. These classes really help the kids with their social and emotional development as they learn to work together, take risks, and open up and share their creativity with the group.
