Introduction: There’s nothing more satisfying than having performed for friends and family in recital after months of practicing. These kinds of experiences are the ones that students look back on and cherish in their lives. I have fond memories of lessons with my teacher, who was like a second father to me. He taught me important life skills and guided me throughout my adolescent and early adult life. Cello lessons are fun! They are also challenging and you are expected to come each week having prepared the previous week’s assignments. We cover the fundamentals of cello playing such as bow grip, posture, and shifting, with emphasis on good intonation and sound production. Performing is an important part of learning the cello, so I push students to find outside performing opportunities such as youth orchestras, festivals, and competitions. Fall and spring recitals give students a chance to perform pieces they have been practicing for friends and family to enjoy. To adult students: it’s never too late to start learning to play the cello! My adult students have had success with cello playing and surprise themselves with their ability and progress. I see myself as a lifelong student and learn something new every lesson I teach. That’s because every student is unique and learns differently. Seeing the the musical growth of my students over the years is extremely satisfying as a teacher.

Andy Ly deserves way more than 5 stars! I am an adult (40+) cello learner, and former HS symphonic band flute player. I only knew two things about the cello when I arrived to my first lesson with Andy--1) I love how the cello sounds and 2) I wanted to learn to play the cello. I have since learned that the cello's capabilities are only limited by the player, which could be overwhelming for an extreme novice like me. But! Andy is very patient and flexible, and has a good sense of humor (for when my bow has a mind of its own and my notes fall scratchy and flat...or painfully sharp). Andy weekly adapts his teaching to my strengths and limitations, slowly coaxing the cello player out of me. Andy masterfully teaches how to play the cello, how to read music, best ways to practice, and passes on to his students a historical knowledge and love of the cello and the pure joy of playing cello music.
