Introduction: The quality of my teaching, and my commitment to my students. Before every class, I create customized lesson plans for each student. I am passionate about my student's progress and personally research their favorite music to teach them just how to do what their favorite artists do! I fix issues that they're having with technique. My lessons are extremely high quality, and I emphasize truly becoming a musician, rather than just learning how to play guitar or piano or sing. I have a discerning ear, and I really appreciate when my students feel like they've gotten a good value for their money, because they're continually improving. I teach any style, including video game music, rap, hip hop and country, and I also teach improvisation and songwriting, as well. Lessons are fun and full of joy and lots of laughter. My students view me as a friend and really love coming to me every week because I'm not just a teacher; I'm also mentor and fellow musician! I love when my students grow and develop passion as pianists, guitarists, and singers. I love to be a catalyst for musical improvement. I have so much fun teaching people to love to play music and sing effortlessly! There is nothing better than mastering a new skill as a musician - I love passing that feeling on to my students. I like working with all different levels of students! I love watching my students grow, and feel more confident and have pride in what they're doing. I love inspiring my students - there's nothing better in the world than the feeling that you truly touched your student's heart, not just their head. I love it when my student's say that coming to me is their favourite part of the week!

Vanessa is such a great teacher! Im learning guitar and singing from her and she is SO helpful! She really cares about my progress as a musician! Vanessa takes her own free time to customize lessons for me, which is so amazing. My guitar playing has improved so much with her help. I was a total beginner when I started, and had trouble pressing my fingers down on the strings. Now, Im playing songs that I like, reading music, and feeling proud of my accomplishments I can play guitar and sing at the same time! Since I started lessons with her, Ive become so much more confident as a singer. Her training has been amazing! My range, tone, and breath control are so much better. Shes an awesome teacher!

Vanessa is patient, knowledgable, and fun! When I told her I wanted to learn to play video-game music, she found a bunch of video-game music for me, and tailored our lessons to that goal! I'm still taking lessons from her, and am making great progress.

I've had other voice teachers before, but I've struggled with improving my range and staying on pitch. Vanessa spends time customizing each lesson so that I really improve. And she actually makes doing warm ups fun. I didn't think that was possible. I'm learning more with her than I ever have with any other music teacher! And I sing way better. 2 thumbs so far up my joints hurt! -Rob H

I highly recommend Vanessa's piano lessons. I've learned so much from her about technique, music theory and performance. Piano lessons with Vanessa are so helpful - she applies every bit of theory that I learn to pieces that I'm playing. For example, when I was learning the D major scale, she had me learn a piano piece in D major from an artist that I liked. Not only am I learning new skills all the time, but I now can actually play songs that I like - and I can learn them quickly! It's been awesome!

I really like how open-minded she is and how she can teach you a variety of things. She can help you find your voice, when you thought you had none. She makes the warmups, the lessons and everything fun. I learned things I didn't know about the guitar. She lets you learn with music you like or with music that she knows will fit your voice really well, and that you'll like. She is very kind, bubbly, enthusiastic and really works hard at what she does. For what she does I'd say she is the best fit for anyone!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
$40-$45 - $45/hr at your home, $40/lesson if you pay for 10 lessons upfront. $35/hr if you take lessons at my studio in North Park. If necessary, I may be able to work within your budget.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
1. Find out what my new student wants to learn musically. 2. I research my student's favorite music, to better help them learn how to play or sing it. 3. I determine my new student's skill level. 4. I use clear techniques and objectives to help my student progress. 5. I teach them the skills they need to learn to improve - tone, scales, rhythm, ear training, reading.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my musical education at the UCSD School of Music and MiraCosta College's Contemporary Music Program. UCSD School of Music taught me to expand my limits musically, and MiraCosta taught me about jazz, contemporary music and musicianship! I have a passion for theory and musicianship, because I know that if you don't know enough about those two, you can't get your hands and voice to do what you want them to musically!
