REVIEW OF BILL YANOWSKY Bill Yanowsky is an excellent personal trainer. He has been my personal trainer for the past three years on a weekly basis at the Santa Clara Valley Jewish Community Center. I am a senior adult (67 years old) in good health. As a teacher myself, I set very high standards. I have found that Bill consistently excels on all measures of professionalism and competence. Of the half dozen trainers with whom I have worked over the years, Bill is clearly the best. Bill has many commendable qualities. First, he has excellent communication skills. His instructions about how to perform the various exercises are always detailed, precise, and clear. He carefully monitors the way that I follow his instructions. If I fail to perform a particular exercise correctly, he explains what I am doing wrong and how I should modify my movements (e.g., suggesting that I adjust the distance between my hands and/or feet or bend further in a given direction). He then asks me to confirm whether I can tell the difference in my posture before and after–- thereby helping me to learn how to perform the exercises correctly so that I can repeat them on my own. Bill always ensures that I do the various exercises correctly and safely in ways that maximize my results and prevent injuries. Second, Bill is an excellent listener. As an older adult, I have certain physical limitations (arthritis, tendonitis, ankle/heel pain). When we first started working together, Bill asked me about my physical limitations. Although many trainers perform this initial evaluation, Bill is unique in his ability to remember my physical limitations and consistently give me exercises that accommodate these limitations. Better yet, however, he suggests exercises that actually relieve the symptoms of these medical conditions. Moreover, at the beginning of a session, he frequently inquires how I’m feeling. Then, he adjusts the pace and rigor of our sessions accordingly. In addition, he has a good grasp of my personal situation – my stress and lifestyle – and understands how my fitness goals are affected by my personal situation. Third, Bill is extremely knowledgeable about health and fitness. He has impressive credentials as a physical therapist and personal trainer. He has made many helpful suggestions that have improved my physical well-being, including advice about diet, weight loss, sleep, proper athletic shoes, and overall physical functioning. In addition, Bill sets realistic and achievable fitness goals in accordance with my physical needs and limitations. Finally, on a personal level, Bill has an engaging demeanor. Based on my observations of his work at the gym, he works well with a broad range of people – from teenagers to older adults like me. He is dependable and conscientious. He is always on time and never misses sessions. If the need to reschedule arises, he confirms via email. He has a delightful, dry sense of humor that makes our sessions enjoyable. He always manages to keep me engaged and motivated – a daunting task at 6 o’clock in the morning! In sum, I give him my highest recommendation. Kelly Weisberg Professor of Law

After a year of PT for a knee injury I was still not getting better or able to train for an upcoming 1/2 marathon. After just eight weeks with Bill I was ready to train full time.

I have been working with Bill for just about two years and my fitness has improved significantly in that time. I initially signed up for general fitness training, but was excited to learn that Bill has professional hockey training experience. I had taken a five year hiatus from the sport and wanted to start playing again but was concerned about injuries at my now more advanced age. Bill was able to select targeted exercises to bring me back to playing shape and have fun in the process. Thanks Bill!
