Introduction: My 30 years of teaching experience combined with a lifelong love of piano inform my customized approach to each and every student.  Music Theory and History are a part of each lesson to some extent. If are If you have always wanted to learn to improvise  or just want a greater understanding and facility with Pop, Blues, Jazz or Funk/r & b,  let me be your guide. I can save you time by showing you ways of conceiving melody, rhythm and harmony that will allow you to explore on your own and find the sounds and grooves you like. I can help you to find the right "prescription" for your practicing and listening by focusing in on problems, but also by exposing you to a broad range of styles and influences. My own background is rather broad.  I have played in many bands of many kinds, composed scores for theatre and dance, directed plays and taught at Universities. Currently I am playing with the Ace Plata Quintet in which my wife is the vocalist. We moved to West Covina in LA County in 2015. I am currently taking on a limited number of students in the greater Los Angeles area. Get in touch to discuss rates and availability. I look forward to hearing from you. I enjoy helping musicians learn to improvise and make their own musical choices.

I studied jazz improvisation with Dr. Davis for about a year. Before that, I had been taking piano lessons for several years, mostly playing classical and ragtime. I was a big fan of jazz and really wanted to learn more about jazz theory and the art of improvisation. So, I began to study with Charles (CB) Davis and he quickly immersed me into a new world of chords, inversions, and progressions using the John Mehegan series of books as structure for our lessons. It was truly a joy studying with Dr. Davis and I certainly became a better piano player, both technically and conceptually, because of my lessons with him. I wish I had had the opportunity to study longer with Dr. Davis, but unfortunately, I moved out of town and had to discontinue our lessons. I highly recommend Dr. Davis as a very effective, motivating, and caring instructor.

CB seems like the perfect teacher: he knows his material and has the skills to share it. His broad background in the 'humanities', being familiar with everything in Western Culture (it seemed to me), starting with the Greeks, going through drama, literature, and many forms of music, really gives him a huge toolbox for communication with students. Add to this his congenial spirited personality and I think you have a pretty good chance of learning the material, and having it be a fun process as well!

We had lots of quotes submitted to us almost immediately. From a large selection of musical professionals we were able to find exactly the right fit to be my sin's jazz piano teacher. So easy!

I haven't had a lesson yet, so I can't really say what I've liked about working with him. But he's been thoughtful and responsive so far. Fingers crossed!
