Barnie was awesome! Had a pretty big project taking my kitchen ceiling down and replacing it. He did a great job at a great price! He showed up everyday until the job was done. He also replaced the walls in the basement bathroom because of flood out damage. The end price was close enough to the original quote and I was happy with that! I definitely will be using his company again.

We were remodeling our guest bathroom and hired Francisco to hang Hardie board and install new floor tile and subway tile around the shower. He did a magnificent job at a very competitive price! Francisco is very professional and completed the job on schedule as promised. He will be my first call on any future projects!!!!

I hired Josh Yohn to assemble 3 large pieces and 1 small piece of furniture I had purchased through Wayfair Furniture Company and he did a great job of putting it together. In my opinion, it was very complicated but he made it look simple. He did such a fine job in a timely manner, I hired him to tear out the vanity in my master bath and to install a new one. Not only did he install the new vanity, but where it was required, he replaced all the tile, put in new plumbing, new electrical, hung cabinets, did all the trim work, and painted. He did an absolutely wonderful job paying attention to the smallest of details. He is a man of very fine character and I had even paid him before the job was finished because I knew he would be back the next day! I highly recommend Josh to anyone and to everyone.

I received multiple messages about my bathroom project, but Latta’s was by far the most professional. He quoted me a good price just based on my description and photos, and ended up sticking to that price once he had the chance to see it in person. He did high quality work and finished in a timely manner. I wanted to hire him to paint the rest of the house, but with the bathroom looking so good it sold before he had the chance!

We noticed a leak in our bathroom after a big storm. My husband asked for roofing recommendations on a local neighborhood page and was given Steve’s name. We called him and he was very prompt to come and assess our problem the very same day. The job was completed within 24 hours. Steve is very fair and his workers were kind and professional. He treats his customers with respect and courtesy. I highly recommend his business for your roofing needs.

Blane did an excellent job helping with my remodel. Removal of carpet and replacement with the laminate I provided went very well and my living room looks great. His work in the bathroom was great also. This included installing a new toilet, vanity (including sink), mirror, and lights. He was easy to work with and his pricing was reasonable.

Chad with CGB Contractors was very professional and his quality for work was unbelievably perfect! He did a much better job than that of the Big Box home improvement stores. My wife and I where so impressed with his work and the value he provided that we have proceed to hire him to install tile in our shower, on the walls of our bathroom and install a pocket door. You can not go wrong with Chad and his crew at CGB Contractors.

We had a master bath remodel which included removing a shower stall, whirlpool tub and moving the toilet to a new location. He installed new tile in the entire bathroom and master closets, a tiled shower with bench, new exhaust with light, linen closet, utility closet and a water closet. The Guys With Tools arrived as they said they would and got the job done in a timely manner. He was pleasant and easy to work with. After this job was completed, we had him come and lay more tile in another bathroom. I would recommend them (and have to all I've talked to) for any job you are considering. We will be using them again when the need arises.

He explained everything in detail and came up with different options so my bathroom remodel could get done with everything I wanted but was able to save me around $300 in the end. I am very happy with my bathroom and plan to hire him again for my next project.

Gustavo has done work for me both at my home and business. At work he rewired my box so I could direct power to where I needed it. Previous electricians had been unable to figure this out. At home he installed a chandelier for me. All of his work is top-notch and efficient. I plan to use him again and again!

We have used Renovation Crew on two different projects. The first was a complete renovation of our Master Bathroom. David McCormick came to our house and worked with us on the design and then gave a quote for the entire project. He had some great ideas, but also incorporated our preferences for materials and colors. We completely gutted the bathroom and installed new fixtures and surfaces. David scheduled the project for 10 work days and finished in 9. The crew took great care to do quality work. The second project installed wood flooring and a new stove hood in the kitchen, two new toilets and new tile flooring in one bathroom. Again, the quote was detailed and comprehensive, the job was done well and the crew finished the work on time. I highly recommend Renovation Crew for your kitchen and bathroom projects.

The work done on our total bathroom remodel and the attention to detail could not have been better. Instead of a "rush job," they took time to do work that will last. They redid some of the sub-flooring and joist work that other contractors might have accepted as "good enough," which made Murray's work truly excellent. Their finishing touches were show-room quality. For any work in the future, we will definitely call Murray's Flooring. We couldn't be happier. (And nice guys, too; very pleasant to work with.)

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

        • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
        • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
          • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
        • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

        What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

        • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
        • Toilet replacement: $75.
        • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
        • Faucet replacement: $125.
        • Garbage disposal: $75.

        Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
