I hired Steel City Woodworks to complete several repair items, including the replacement and addition of wooden spindles on the railing on my wraparound porch, replacement of rotten soffits, installation of new attic fan, and replacement of two interior doors. The work was completed in a very prompt and professional manner, and at a reasonable price. Shawn is also very good at communicating timelines and any changes in scheduling. I will definitely hire him for additional projects and I highly recommend him and his company to anyone requiring woodworking installation or repairs.

Chris was very fast and communicated very well. We had a little mixup with the timing but that did not detract from the work. Hope to work with him again in the future.

My whole experience with Jonathan Boyles was wonderful. Jonathan built a sewing cabinet/desk for me. It is a beautiful piece of furniture and everything I could hope for as far as housing my sewing machine and storing my sewing and quilting supplies. We have already asked for a quote on another project for our home.

Vines Woodwork (especially Trent) is by far the best contractor of any kind that we worked with when building our house. He was on time, creative, talented, and very reasonably priced. I wish I could give more stars!!!

I am a one man shop with over thirty years experience, specializing in custom designed free standing furniture and built in cabinetry. I spend as much time as is necessary with the customer, to perfect a design that fulfills your needs while reflecting your style and personality. Working in both traditional and contemporary style venues, we mutually develop the design to its final form. I utilize Autodesks AutoCad Architectural Desktop, which is the industries recognized leader in computer aided drafting software for preliminary and final working drawings. This allows me to respond quickly and easily with multiple design changes and what if scenarios. We then carefully select the species of exotic or domestic hardwoods (frequently using a combination of both) to further contribute to the character of the piece. While it is customary today to outsource certain elements of cabinetry such as doors and drawers, I refuse to follow that trend. I custom build every piece of the project from raised panel stile and rail doors, to hard maple drawers with 100% dovetail joinery. This approach allows me complete control over the quality of the craftsmanship and the selection of the wood used. Essential to my designs is the attention I pay to the small details, something that is missing in production line furniture and cabinetry. I never use inferior quality products such as fiberboard, particle board, melamine, etc. I only use FAS (first and second) grade domestic and exotic hardwoods and matching veneer core furniture grade plywood where appropriate. Since I am a one man shop with low overhead, I can usually build something to your requirements that is less costly than store bought and of course with far greater quality. My personal guarantee and commitment to customer satisfaction always insures a successful project. I am looking forward to the opportunity to meet your needs and exceed your expectations. Please give me a call if you have a project in mind. You can also visit my simswoodworks website.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
