After receiving multiple quotes, Brian and his crew were hired to fix a small hole in my roof. Upon his inspection, he found a couple of places that were rotted and also found out why they rotted. He repaired the hole, replaced the rotted wood, re-secured the fascia, cleaned out the gutters and resealed the patio roofing on the back of the house. Everything beyond the hole repair was added on via text as he kept me updated throughout the day. My experience with Brian was extremely professional, friendly and informational which, as a first time home owner, I was extremely thankful and appreciative. I was prepared to end up paying over twice as much as the original quote and was pleasantly surprised that it was only a few hundred dollars more. When it comes time for a full roof replacement, Clear Choice will definitely be hearing from me.

Just got the finishing touches on my man cave. The cabinets Curtis Dycus custom built compliments my room amazingly. He also built a platform for my theatre seating. The quality of his work is excellent and I definitely would refer him to others. No beating around the bush, he gets on the job and in a timely manner. Will be calling on him again for other work!

Working with Advanced Roofing Solutions was a positive experience. They presented a detailed, precise description of the repair of the subdivision's fishing pier. The work was begun and completed at the agreed upon time. To make the repair even more professional, a contractor was present at the job site at all times. The result was a well built, attractive fishing pier. I will recommend that the HOA continue to use their services. I, myself, will use them for projects in my home

Mr. Parsons came to my home march of last year and gave me an estimate to redo my front lawn. He removed the old sod. He then prepared the ground to lay down new sod. He also built custom tree rings out of stack stones to match the long flower bed along the front of my home also done in stack stone. My yard was a complete disaster, but thanks to mr. Parsons my yard has won a beautification award this past year. He was the cheapest bid that I found, so we went with him. We were very skeptical at first cause of mr. Parsons bid being lower than everyone elses. People this is a great honest guy. Mr. Parsons and his guys work was by far worth more to me than what he bidded. Mr. Parsons spoke with me at every step of the way, to make sure that I was pleased with what had been done so far. Mr. Parsons and his crew always kept the work area safe and clean as possible. My yard looks better now than I have ever dreamed of. I have recommended several customers to him and will continue too.

We are happy with our plans from ERDD. They did their best to help us to design our forever home and we are happy with the end results. They were willing to make many changes to the original design which shows they are willing to go the extra mile to make their customers happy. They came to our home initially to see where the house would be built and we had our finished plans within 2 1/2 weeks. They could have finished much quicker but my wife and I made a lot of changes so we went thru about 11 drafts to get to the finished project. The fact that they were willing to work with us to this extent means we would use them again if we ever need an architect again.

Chris mounted our 55 inch smart tv in our fireplace nook that had a recess of about 30 inches. The job required him to place a wall within the recess, paint it to match the fireplace, then place the mount and connect all the devices for TV. He did an excellent job and it definitely exceeded our expectations. The TV looks great and it looks clean with no wires showing. The price was great for what we were asking. We have several other projects in the near future and plan on utilizing his services for them. I would definitely recommend him for anyone needing custom work done in and around their home!

Mr. Willoughby replaced a fan for me, replaced porch lights, a storm door and mailbox. He also built a beautiful small porch to replace out small concrete stoop, made custom shutters for us and painted the front door. He is very comfortable to have around, easy to talk to, fanatical about his work and trustworthy. I will have him back for future work including a bathroom remodel.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
