My daughter is getting her house ready to sell. Dave was very helpful in providing options that added value without being expensive. They laid new tile, replaced kitchen and bathroom countertops, replaced a sliding glass door, and handled all plumbing and electrical changes required. Dave was very reliable and punctual and coordinated with us continuously. I was very satisfied with his work and have already referred him to a friend. I will definitely ask Dave to do more work for me in the future.

We purchased our home 11 years ago as a 'fixer upper'. Though out the years we have worked with several contractors. Of all the contractors we've ever worked with, All Aspects Painting and Home Repair are the most professional company we've ever worked with. Their prices are reasonable and their attention to detail is impeccable! The cabinets and flooring in our kitchen looks great. Their work superceded my expectations. Chris was even nice enough to help me with some small DIY projects. They showed up bright and early and on time every single day. They also cleaned their work area before leaving every afternoon. I would recommend this company to anyone and everyone without any hesitation. Thanks so much guys. We're looking forward to our next project and working with you again!

Brian was excellent, timely (had an emergency and he came same day, within 5 minutes of our agreed time), and very friendly. He repaired my washer/dryer faucets and then helped to rewire several light switches. The house was empty as we are trying to sell it. While Brian was waiting for me to get back to the house, he replaced light bulbs throughout the house, just because. While he was not the cheapest offer we got, we were extremely satisfied and already considering him for additional projects. Thanks Brian, you are truly a diamond in the rough.

To date, Rick and his team have completed three jobs for me: 1) Replace rotten garage door opening trim board and paint to match as well as fix a loose shingle and flashing around my chimney, 2) New replacement double gate and replace several boards on my fence, 3) Stain new gate and replaced boards. I can be a tough customer. As an engineer, I expect work to be done to my standards - as I would do it. Not only did Advanced Roofing Solutions complete all of these tasks on time and on budget, but the quality of their work was excellent. I have found Rick and his team to be honest and trustworthy people who take pride in their work, and it shows. They will be back in the Fall to stain my entire fence. I have found it difficult to find a company here in Huntsville that does good work at a reasonable price. My search is over. There is no question that I would call Advanced Roofing Solutions for any work I need taken care of around the house.

Bentley Parks of BP Construction was the general contractor for all work following black-in of my house. This included plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, tile showers, tile flooring, hardwood flooring, and t&g ceiling. He and his selected a group of subcontractors did good to excellent work and were flexible and helpful as we worked through the many details that always come to mind of home owners as work progresses. As a new company, BP Construction needed the final payments on his very competitive bid up front to complete all contracted work. Mr. Parks kept his commitments and corrected punch list issues well after being paid in full. With us, he has earned his reputation for seeing a job through to a successful conclusion.

Ulysses had to scim and prime a wall for us for a wallpaper installation. He responded to my request within minutes and was able to go out and get a scope of the work (dealing with a high security building). He had to jump through several hoops in getting clearance paperwork and screening before he could enter the building. He did a fantastic job and my client was very pleased. More importantly he was able to recommend better materials to produce the job. Highly recommended. Very Professional and trustworthy.

Rick has done a great job for my family. First he took out an old tub/shower combo and installed a massive tile shower. Then he took old barn wood and made a memorable coffe table that will forever remind my husband of his grandfather. Thanks Rick!!

First the owner got me a great discount on a brand new hot water heater and moved it to a new location in my house. Based on that I had them come out for a new renovation to my master bathroom which included moving my toilet & vanity. They also framed and built a shower and ran all new water lines, valves, and what not. They have also installed and renovated all the plumbing for my kitchen renovation I had. Very professional, always on time, reasonably priced (cheaper than anu local plumber I have found), and they do phenomenal work. Would highly recommend and will continue to use for all my plumbing needs.

Mr. Smith helped me out on a few things such installing walls and repairing some water damaged joists in the floor. He put in two different door systems for me and remodeled a new closet for my niece. He was very good and thorough when getting these things done. He made some suggestions which I didn't see when planning this project out, these suggestions made the project really take shape. A really competent professional who exceeded my expectations. His price was great and his work ethic was incredible. I recommend him to any one who has got a project going on and wants it done right. I will use his services in the future. Madison remodeling does quality work and Mr. Smith lives up to his work from start to end.

We had a new construction home and James Lewis was an authorized dealer/installer of Onyx products for our 2.5 bathrooms. He installed a custom walk in shower and a double vanity top in our master bathroom. He installed Onyx vanity tops in the other two bathrooms. The fit and finish work in the walk in shower met all our expectations. His attention to detail was exceptional. James Lewis was courteous and willing to work with our ideas. We were pleased with his workmanship and skill. We gladly recommend James Lewis if you want to hire a professional you can trust.

He worked very hard , had to fight the weather , but stuck with it. Cleaned up every day. I'm going to have him change out my sliding door to a french door. Thanks again Jabo for the excellent and hard work.

Mark (owner) has been doing jobs around my father's house for years. Replacing front doors, rail work on the porch, even hanging large pictures for my mother. Scheduled an appointment for him to install new fireplace mantle and trim work in my own home. Came as scheduled, knocked the job out professionally, quickly and cheaper than what the big box stores were going to charge. Very pleased! Don't hesitate calling this handy man!

Roof Tech was originally hired to do a small project of finishing and painting my laundry room walls. The job was so beautifully completed with an extra touch of air freshener added to the paint so that my house did not have the paint odor, that I talked to him about applying my backsplash once the cabinets were installed. I also talked to him about a roof and door issue that we had been having for years. Both estimates far exceeded my expectations and the work was performed in a very meticulous, professional, and timely manner. His crew were very respectful and professional. They were on time and cleaned up after ward, including going over our yard several times with a magnet to pick up loose nails. Mike Raby is a pleasure to work with. He's very professional and takes obvious pride in the end product/job. I could not ask for a better contractor to work with. He gave advice when needed and displayed integrity, knowledge and concern in our satisfaction of the completed job. My husband and I will definitely be hiring him again for future projects. And we highly recommend him and his company to friends neighbors and strangers. We truly appreciate Mike.

Sal did a great job installing crown moulding and baseboard in a home that I just purchased. My renovation job is huge and Sal went above and beyond to answer my questions and explain his work. He is detailed oriented and completed the job professionally. My husband and I are definitely considering hiring Sal again for our other home renovation projects. He is also reasonable and offers competitive prices.

Sam Howard and his crew at Pro Building Solutions remodeled our whole house for us. We had a projected time frame of 3 weeks (for only the bathroom remodel), added in a lot of custom details in the middle of the job, including taking out a wall, doing a custom beadboard wainscoting in the bathroom, changing out all of the outlets/switches in the entire house, and replacing all of the interior doors/hardware and somehow still ended up with only 3 weeks and 3 days in total for our job! We were more than satisfied with their performance! Every time we added something to the job, he would give us an estimation of how much time we were adding to the total of the job. In the end, they far exceeded our time frame in which we were expecting. There were quite a few different guys coming in and out of the house, but all of them were courteous, professional, and took the time to listen to our needs. Sam helped greatly with the design side. From start to finish he really made it an easy process in choosing which products to use based on our budget that we had presented him from the beginning of the job. We selected a few upgrades that put us over our budget, after all, you're only going to remodel once! However, we were able to save on some other materials that Sam had recommended during the process with his contractor prices. He also handled all of the delivery of our materials and never once charged us for the many hours of consultations he provided throughout the construction process. Here is the scope of work in which they performed for our house: Patched all of the sheet rock walls for paint. Removed a wall going into the living area opening up the living room to the hallway. Laid laminate flooring in the hallway. Changed out all of the doors and their respective hardware in the house. Changed out all of the outlets and switches from the old almond color to an updated white color. Changed the light in the guest bedroom to a ceiling fan with light. Replaced the rotten subfloor in the bathroom. Raised the vanity in the bathroom and refinished it. Removed the old tile wainscoting from the 60's and installed an updated wooden beadboard wainscot. Installed all accessories, mirror, and miscellaneous items I requested (at no additional cost!) Installed a GORGEOUS curbless tile shower up to handicap code for my elderly father who could not walk anymore (had to roll him in and out with a wheelchair). Changed out the 50 year old toilet to a new and updated toilet. Tiled the floor. And last but certainly not least, painted the whole house (1,400 square feet). By the end of the job, I felt like my whole house had undergone a face-lift! I absolutely hate the construction process (tearing my house apart) but all in all, Pro Building Solutions helped to make my project as easy and pain free as possible. They kept the job site clean every day, made sure I could park my car in the garage, and were always there to help me, even if it was to carry a few bags of groceries into my house on their lunch break. Overall, I would highly recommend Sam and Pro Building Solutions to anyone looking for a quality remodel and an affordable price! They went the extra mile for me and always communicated every step of the way. Any issues were addressed swiftly and as cost effectively as possible. Pro Building Solutions is the only company I will let work on my house!

I am very pleased with Jay and Daniel, they finished my basement for me. I wanted a kind of contemporary yet rustic look . they incorporated a ton of beautiful oak wood and stone that they had reclaimed from barns and old structures.. the attention to detail that these guys have is amazing. Daniel is very good at cutting and installing trims and building and installing cabinets. Jay is a very highly skilled tile installer and just Craftsman in general. The tile shower and floors are simply flawless. It's incredible, his work is superb and his ability to Invision and Create what I was trying to explain to him is just amazing, I will definitely use these guys again and strongly suggest you do as well. Thanks you guys, y'all are wonderful and I'm loving my new basement

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
