Oh man these guys are great. Dealt with George and he is just super smart and has a TON of great information that I truly didn't even consider before meeting up with him. George and his crew installed a new roof and I couldn't be happier with his pricing and my new roof. You can't go wrong getting your new roof with Arizona Native Builders. Highly recommended! Thanks George and AZNB.

McBride was awesome. Every person involved gave me confidence. I couldn't be happier with the outcome. Great price and quality craftsmanship. We had water damage due to poor construction of the original home builder. 32 years had taken its toll and mold was growing inside the house. McBride put a great crew on the project; they took their time, did things right, and walked me through the areas of concern. They also stayed in communication with the mold remediation company so things could be scheduled properly. I appreciated their professionalism and seamless project with no hiccups. We highly recommend McBride.

Allen has been an invaluable resource in renovating my new/old house over the past month. There is nothing this man can't do! From small tasks to complicated tasks, he is a genius. He comes up with creative ideas for fixes that seem impossible. His prices are very reasonable and he tries to save you money compared to hiring the big companies. His "down home" Missouri cheerfulness and honesty is a pleasure. I now trust him to work alone in my home while I am out doing my own activities. I highly recommend this wonderful young man. Allen is one of the best workers I have ever hired which is why he is now my property manager in addition to being my handyman/plumber/electrician/painter/roofer/builder. You will be so glad you hired him!

5 star company! Had them take out our builder grade tub and twin sink, install new higher profile toilet and put in a large walk in shower with sprayers at both ends with center entrance. Narsay and Sammy Bello did a great job explaining their process, timelines and how to save expense with our selections. Their tile guy was phenomenal as well. After we agreed on price and timelines we decided to add some extras like new lighting fixtures we had purchased and two very heavy mirrors - they agreed to hang them at no additional charge. We also had them install backsplash in our kitchen area and it turned out much better than our expectations. We had selected tile already for it and Sammy took the time to go shop for something we might like better and we loved his choice. He took our tile back to return it as well. Two very hardworking and experienced guys that I'd recommend for a major master bath remodel or kitchen remodel. Our son liked the work and is considering doing a similar project and we recommended Venus Homes LLC to him as well.

We hired S&R builders to do a kitchen and master bathroom/closet renovation that we had a strict budget for. They did such a great job with our initial request that we kept adding to our project list, and they were eager to help and offered stellar pricing!! They did our entire remodel from demoing walls, reframing and texturizing, moving and adding of plumbing, moving and adding of electrical, shower tiling, kitchen backsplash, and facilitated the installation of our countertops. We are very pleased with the outcome. It turned out better than we imagined and we will definitely be recommending them to our friends!!

Have known and worked with Chris since 2004. He did a major renovation/expansion at our home in Desert Highlands in 2004/05. The work was of the highest quality, on time and on budget. Chris was very reponsive to our needs and flexible with changes which made the whole process very easy and non stressful for us. We still love the work that was done and the major improvements it made to our property. In addtion, the pricing that Chris gave us was very competitive with the two other bids that we got on that particular job. Since than, Chris has done many other smaller jobs at our home and we continue to use him for the same reasons we hired him the first time. We highly recommend Chris for any type of construction or maintenance work you may require on your property or building something from scratch.. Also we would be happy to talk to anyone about Chris if you are considering him for a job. Elsie and Alan Gregson.

Worked with Principal Builders on this roofing project. Early on it was only the roof however with their experience and level of comfort I decided to expand the original scope to include other areas I was originally going to wait on. Great project management, product, workmanship and quality. I enjoyed working with them and am already planning my next project.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
