We're snowbirds working with Victoria to make selections for our soon-to-be-completed home in Goodyear. So far we've worked with Victoria remotely from our summer home, either by phone or email with lots of pictures. Soon we'll spend a couple of days with Victoria in Arizona to make selections for window treatments and furniture. Victoria has taken the time to find out what we want our home to look like, what furniture and accessories we already have and what we need to buy. She knows where to shop and has suggested great options, both online and brick and mortar stores. She's helped us create to-do lists and keeps us on track with a series of phone calls and emails. Victoria helped us overcome our feeling of being overwhelmed with choices by helping us make selections in a logical order and by using checklists. She's also very good with colors so we don't feel like we'll be repainting or regretting any selections because we picked the wrong shade. In the end, we are confident our home will look great. Most importantly, our home will look like 'our home'. Victoria hasn't forced her style on us the way some interior designers can - she's been great at helping us execute our own style. Victoria is a ball of energy and working with her is really fun. She's also very fair in how she charges for her time. We would recommend Victoria to anyone, and for people who need to work on their home remotely as we did, Victoria is a perfect fit.

Cindy has worked with me over the past few years to transform my house as we've worked to accommodate a growing family, mother-in-law addition and a shared home office. We have had changes too numerous to count. Through it all, Cindy has provided wonderful, cost-effective ideas -- with a smile on her face and a positive attitude! I would highly recommend Cindy to anyone looking for interior design assistance.

Christine has been really great to work with! I’ve never hired an interior designer before, so I didn’t know what to expect. Christine helped us totally update our living room area including the paint, flooring, lighting, and furniture. She worked without our budget, worked with the contractors who did the remodel work, and selected some really great items for the space! I’m so happy to come home from work and enjoy our new living room with my three little kids, we all have been enjoying it so much! I would recommend Christine to anyone!

Karen helped me design a smaller living space to appear larger. We added a mirror which I never would have thought of which made the kitchen appear larger. We created a wonderful sitting area with a couple of chairs and room for dancing which is my passion. I got to know Karen a little more and she is a beautiful person inside and out.

Our house was an auction home in need of serious upgrading. We have had Steve and Diane do so many tasks for us, it's hard to know where to start. They painted the interior of our house, power washed the pool, installed tile back splash in kitchen, and a new range hood, tiled two showers, repaired the pool motor, helped pick out a large package of landscaping and got it planted, repaired lawn irrigation system. This is an amazing, hard working, conscientious couple that we would highly recommend. No job seems too large or too small.

I'd been in a funk with my interior styling for a while. Just couldn't seem to get my front room to layout just right. She came in there, used what I had, recommended a few pieces I could add and made magic happen. I love how she took unexpected pieces from my home and made beautiful collections from them on my shelves. I'm a huge fan! I'll definitely use Eirene again in the future! She's a decor goddess.

I can offer my highest recommendation for Ashli of Design Outside the Lines. Ashli did an outstanding job of staging my bridal shower in 2015. She has posted pictures on her website of my event, and as you will see, everything was beyond beautiful, every detail perfect. I received so many comments from people that it was the most awesome shower they had ever attended, and I was beyond pleased with the results. Then in 2016, it was baby-time. I panicked when thinking about accomplishing the nursery, and called Ashli who came to the rescue big-time! She asked many questions regarding our preferences, and designed and completely transformed the room into a truly outstanding nursery for our little girl. As you look at the before and after pictures, you may think that she must be a miracle-worker….and I’d say she definitely is! She exceeded our expectations and we could not be happier with Ashli’s services.

Debbie helped me make my last house absolutely perfect. She listened and assessed what I would like very well. She worked very hard to find all the right pieces and brought all the items to my home so we could see how they looked, and was always very happy to take something away if it did not work - MOST THINGS worked and it was beautiful in the end. I also felt Debbie was good at working within my budget. It was a great, professional experience and we are still close friends. Can't wait to do another house with Debbie.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

I was looking to decorate my room. Mostly, I want to focus on turning my closet which has two sliding doors and shelves into a study space, a cloffice. I wanted to take the doors and shelves out and put a desk and new shelves and possible a chandelier? I have a dresser but I was looking for advice for more clothes storage? I'm open to under the bed drawers maybe? I love vintage styles, red and gold details and I'm obsessed with NYC. I'm a teenage girl and I'm looking to spend about $500 or less. I'm open to many ideas. Thank you.
