After a few miss calls Jon and I was able to connect (to no one fault). He came out to look at a job to install a mini split system at my house. Later that evening I hired Jon for the job. He was prompt, professional. He explained and answered my questions whenever I had them. I understand he is an owner operator and I am delighted to give him my business and would recommend him to anyone needing heating and cooling services - Ben T.

Chris arrived at the scheduled time and even gave a call ahead of time that he was on his way. He was very friendly and courteous. After describing that I needed the common ground wires connected to both my air handlers he quickly got to work and accomplished the task. He went above and beyond my request by installing the new thermostat with out me asking. He was through to make sure that it was hooked up correctly and that both heating and air conditioning was still working properly. He also offered to come back if anything wasn't working as it should. I would highly recommend Grand Air for HVAC work. Thanks Chris for a job well done.

He really did a fabulous job. And he really is honest. You can tell right off the bat he is a stand up guy. He texted and asked if an earlier time would be ok(most of the time techs just show up early and don't call and if you missed appt gotta reschedule) I said it was fine. Very patient and knows his stuff. I have found a new hvac specialist for all my cooling and heating needs. Thanks Ken!!!

Arrived ontime. Very affordable. Throughly checked furnace for problems. We called him for a second opinion. Air tech heating and cooling said that we basically needed a new furnace($2500). Sam reviewed the notes from Air Tech prior to coming out. He said that the furnace could be fixed and the fix was very affordable, saved us over $2 thousand. We are very happy.

Dealing with Patriot Air was a pleasure. David came by and took a look at every part of the A/C unit and suggested some things that I could do to make the unit run better. One thing that David suggested was to remove a cover that I had over my A/C unit. That cover has been on the unit ever since my wife and I bought our home, but he noticed that trapped heat was making the unit work harder. I removed the cover and now the unit sounds much better. There was a 10 degree difference in temperature and I would have never noticed, if it wasn't for David saying something. He was very knowlegeable and extremely courteous to my wife and daughter, and he is the reason that we will stay with Patriot Air.

I was having a cooling issue with my A/C. AAA came out and quickly diagnosed the problem. I was informed that my current A/C unit was deteriorated and was in need of substantial repairs or a new A/C unit. My A/C unit is on the roof so I had no access to it. The tech actually took photos of the problem area and gave me the option of repairing it or replacing the unit. The tech was absolutely honest with me in that the "fix" may not "cure" the problem. He said the option was purely mine to decide what I wanted to do (in other words, he didn't try to sell me what he wanted to sell me rather he let me make the decision after having all the facts). I decided to replace the unit with a new one. The tech's experience helped me make an informed decision on which unit to choose. After deciding which unit to go with, they scheduled me in. When they arrived, all the tech's were clean and neatly dressed in matching shirts and pants. They were very friendly and had the old unit out and the new unit in, in about 4 hours. The tech installed a new thermostat that they recommended (I recommend it too, the NEST is awesome!!) and set it all up for me and took the time to show me how it operates. All in all, I am 100% pleased with the service I received. Their customer service is excellent and their pricing is very reasonable. I would highly recommend AAA.

Hands down THE best AC/Heating guy in the area! Oscar was very knowledgeable and professional. He answered the phone at 8:30pm and was at our house in less than 10 minutes. He had the parts our AC unit needed, and it was back up and running within 35 minutes. Couldn't have been more of a pleasure to work with. Will use again for any repairs that come about. And will recommend him to anyone that asks!

I got a home energy audit from Mountain Peak Air before the summer hit and I'm SO glad I did! They found a huge hole in my old rotted hard duct work. I ended up replacing all my duct work with nice insulated flex duct work and the air flow is 1000x better. Also added insulation in my attic since I barely had anything and re-did the weather stripping on my exterior doors. My electric bills have been way lower (because I'm not cooling my attic!!) and we are much more comfortable. They were professional, got the work done quickly, and it was super reasonable especially since I got $700 back from SRP rebates. Highly recommend this company.

I have nothing but great things to say about my experience with Desert Hills Heating & cooling. An appointment was available less than 24 hours after I made contact with their Thumbtack rep, and their price was more competitive than 90% of the other bids I received. Paul showed up on time and instantly knew how to fix my issue. He was very friendly, professional, and even went above and beyond to give me some recommendations on how to keep my heating/cooling bills lower. He even used his Nest Pro credentials to extend my manufacturer’s warranty to 5 years! I’ve used other HVAC companies in the past, but for future issues I know exactly who to contact.

Reliable, professional, knowledgeable I can’t say enough about our experience with Daisy Ducts! Our old train wasn’t cooling, the professionals at daisy ducts came out immediately! I thought it was going to cost us a small fortune, turns out it was our compressor that needed to be replaced. The technician who came out was very eficiente and replaced our compressor and it’s been running like a dream ever since! Can’t go wrong with these guys!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
