Doug goes above and beyond in everything he does. He got to know me and geared my resume to who I am and what I need. He is working with me throughout my job search and tweaks my resume/cover letter as needed. He gets things to me when he says he will. It's a pleasant experience working with Doug. I left a resume writing company because my experience with them was extremely opposite of what Doug is providing me. Who he is, the way he works, and his 30 years of HR experience makes him the ideal choice for anyone in search for a job.

Roberta is enthusiastic and pleasant to work with. As new authors, my daughter and I weren't exactly up to snuff with punctuation skills. Roberta keeps you informed of the whys and wherefores. I especially liked the fact that she didn't change anything in my manuscript. She made suggestions that helped fill in the gaps and kept the storyline cohesive. Bottom line: Roberta is professional, knows her craft, and is a team player. I highly recommend her services. I definitely will be using her services again in the future. -- Darlene Eutsler Lewlis

THE SCORE SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. In March of 2015 my son took his first SAT in the spring semester of his Junior year in High School. He has always had an excellent command of English and had not felt the need to seek additional tutoring in preparation. This first shot at the SAT gave him a Writing score of 690 in the Reading portion (within the 95th percentile) and 660 in the Writing portion (within the 92nd percentile). Although we were pleased with his scores, his college counselor however, had already gotten to know him well by this point and thought that with a little guidance and knowledge of testing techniques there could be room for improvement. She recommended we contact Ms. Flowers who immediately started working with him in anticipation of the next SAT test date just a few months away the following June. They worked diligently meeting about once per week until test day. Test day came along and my son took the test and felt very confident upon completion. The results proved the decision and extra effort to tutor with Ms. Flowers was well worth it. The June test score for Reading jumped 90 points to 780 (scoring in the 99th percentile) and the Writing score jumped 50 points to 710 (scoring in the 96th percentile). This was no coincidence, it was due to Ms. Flowers tutoring. Of note, my son is gifted but must also deal with ADD. She knew exactly how to work with him to get the job done. Thank you Ms. Flowers!

Carisa is an editor's dream -- a highly professional freelance writer who is easy to work with and never misses a deadline. As the editor of a monthly magazine, I called on Carisa regularly to interview current advertising clients and write business profile articles about them. She was an accomplished representative of our company to our clients, and I never had to worry about anything. She worked independently, keeping in communication with both myself and my clients, to make sure the finished article was perfect. I'd hire her again without hesitation!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
