Bruce was great! He worked with my busy schedule and was able to come to my house last minute. Rocky (My GSD) took to him like they knew each other for years. Bruce gave me great advice and tips to keep us on the right path for training and socialization.

I hired K9 Katelyn to help train my australian shepherd and liked his approach of positive reinforcement. I've done dog training classes in the past, but hands down I've never learned as much as I did by going through this program. I took at least a page of notes during every session which aided me greatly when we practiced during the week. I literally feel like I have a book of knowledge now and could train any new dog on my own now. And the only reason I think I could do that is because of the copious notes I was asked to take each week during our training sessions. My dog is super well behaved, was able to learn all the skills, and is very obedient now. I can't thank Tom and K9 Katelyn enough for helping me train my dog.

I have been working with Nate for several months. His knowledge of dog behaviors & training methods are unsurpassed. He has given me essential information while training my young, exuberant Aussie. Lucy is a much better behaved pet/famy member since meeting Nate. I would recommend Nate to anyone who would like a well behaved dog!!

I was in search of a trainer for weeks; I didn't want group classes or to leave my dog somewhere for weeks for someone else to train. I really wanted someone to come to my home and train my husband and I on managing our Springer Spaniel puppy. We hit the jackpot when we were referred to Elisa Levenbaum, Fit Dog Training. Our first meeting she said "I'm here to help break his bad habits but not break his spirit" and she has done just that. She made the lessons personalized to what we wanted to work on. Elisa, has shown us how to work with Jax and break some habits and teach him commands that he easily obeys and enjoys. She is always available for questions and has some really great advise in all areas of dog ownership. We are 6 lessons into an 8 lesson package and Jax is doing fabulous. I would highly recommend Elisa to anyone with any aged dog. Our Jax loves her and so do we!

Kimberly came to my home to help me with my two dogs (puppy and older dog) that seemed to be not getting along. She was willing to do an assessment and she gave me amazing feedback as to dog behavior that I did not understand. She was great at interpreting the problem and offered a wonderful solution that is already starting to work. I would highly recommend Kimberly for dog training.

Anita did the grooming from my home without restraints, loosing her temper, or her patience. She let them loose, to collect themselves, allowing the massive adrenaline to subside. Cats, unlike dogs, need a specialized groomer who knows first hand their unique ability to turn anxiety into a full on drama production. Groomers wanting cats use to grooming might use excessive restraints if the situation changes. Anita never did and even iced her clippers so they wouldn't overheat and burn my cats. Anita will be grooming my cats twice a year and bathing De Fang Boy and Bella in the coming months. I can't imagine calling anyone else.

Working with Hunter Canine has been amazing for myself and my year and a half old pitbull mix we rescued last summer. We realized she struggled with socialization with other dogs and it had escalated into fights with our other dogs. I was almost at the end of my rope. Since working with Hunter Canine she is now more responsive to us and getting along with my other dogs. After just 5 weeks of classes she was able to be in a Down stay within a 2 meter circle of 12 other dogs without any issues. I'm so proud of what she's been able to do and I'm so thankful for the help from Hunter Canine. I'm going to continue on my training classes with her cause I know it hkeeps her happy, healthy and calm.

I met Cat as a volunteer with a dog rescue organization and quickly learned to respect and value her evaluative and training expertise. She has a calm, confident, and loving demeanor that dogs respond to immediately. We adopted an adult, rescued Doberman that Cat had been instrumental in getting out of a shelter. She believed that he had great potential and was really a very sweet guy that just needed love, attention, and some training. Being a rescue dog we didn’t know his history or the root of socialization problems he had. Cat’s behavioral training helped us to understand the possible causes and she taught us techniques to help him relax and interact with other dogs more calmly. We’ve seen a marked improvement and as we continue working with her, I believe we’ll see more success with his issues. Cat is much more than a trainer; she puts you at ease and gives you confidence that you can succeed in working effectively to train and understand your dog.

Renee's classes were so relaxed and fun. We got a new puppy and this was the first time I'd ever gone to dog training classes. Renee explains how a dog thinks and learns. Teaching them new things is easier than I though it would be. You do need time and patience. I wish I would have done it with our previous dogs. Thanks Renee!

Paws-itively a great experience. We have 3 great dogs that are even greater after being trained by AZ Pawz. We are especially impressed with the socialization training of our one "difficult" little guy. All three can now enjoy the dog park and walks in our busy neighborhood. We also had a barking problem which is much improved after some AZ Pawz training. AZ Pawz trains the dog owner, not just the dog............and I am a much better and happier dog lover after their training assistance. Pawz-itively awesome!!!!!

I love Brandy and Steve. They have paid very close attention to my two dogs, Charlie and Frankie. We came in with two hyper active working dogs that had little training but have picked up so much information in training class. I am trying to beg them to do a level 2 training class for my dogs to be in. I love how attentive they were before and after class with Frankie and Charlie. I also realized a lot of the work was to train me. They have trained me well. I spend 30 min a day with both of my dogs training them separately with all the tricks they taught me in there class. I would highly recommended this obedience class with Brandy and Steve. They are very reasonably priced as well as they answered my response to their services within minutes. They treat my dogs as there own and send out weekly emails regarding all the dogs in the class and what we need to work on. On the off hours of training Brandy answers my texts and sends me additional info regarding activities for working dogs that she thinks would be good for my babes. One week I didn’t have a second handler and she had her husband help me out. She’s a serious gem and moving forward I will only work with her. She’s passionate about what she does and understands dogs so well! Thanks Brandy!

As a first time dog parent, I wanted to get my lab puppy into training as soon as possible. Roxann answered my numerous questions about training and even met with me to answer more questions before we agreed to work together. Roxann worked with my pup and me for five weeks. She also gave tutorials to my parents who were in town so all were communicating the same way to the dog. Roxann was patient and reviewed the lessons as needed. Now my dog is in puppy kindergarten. I am so very glad for the private lessons with Roxann before going to this group class. My dog is much more successful because of the private lessons.

We are so thankful for Chill Out Dog Training! Not only did our puppy, Luna, learn to chill out, but so did we! Luna was exhibiting the typical puppy behaviors for our first several months as owners. Potty training, bite pressure guidance, and boundary setting were daunting tasks. We were embarrassed when Luna would have an accident or greet another human with her mouth around their hand. It became exasperating to come home to a mess all over the floor, especially because we were in the middle of moving. However, Scott calmly walked us through the whole training process. The step-by-step training really helped us tackle one behavior at a time. Now, Luna is completely potty trained, comes on command, sits, stays, and goes to her place. She has learned a few tricks and is still learning how to be a well-behaved puppy. We have also become more informed and relaxed owners. Scott’s advice has truly helped us and we will continue to call Scott with any behavior questions in the future. I highly recommend Chill Out Dog Training!

Karen is wonderful! We have three large dogs and our two males have not been getting along and have gotten into several fights. My husband and I had done everything we could think of and now we need to bring in an expert. Karen is that expert! I interviewed several different trainers and she is the only one that I felt confident in. My animals are my children and I needed someone that understood that connection and who I felt loved animals as much as I do. Who was training dogs because she wanted to make a difference. It has only been a few weeks, but we can see a difference in our animals. She is always there for us to answer questions or give us advice. I can not say enough about how wonderful and knowledgeable she is. I know that I made the right choice when choosing Karen as our trainer.

I highly, highly recommend Brenda at Awesome Mannered Canines! She is an outstanding trainer, and it is clear that she loves what she does! I have worked with a couple of other trainers over the years, and no one has wowed me until I started working with Brenda! I have taken three dogs through her group classes, and every time has been a fantastic experience. Not only do the dogs learn their commands, but they also learn how to behave around other dogs, and in public places! Brenda goes above and beyond just basic puppy training. By the end of the six week class, it is clear that each and every dog enrolled has made tremendous progress! I have also seen remarkable successes in dogs that Brenda has worked with to correct problem behaviors. Two of the dogs in Brenda's Canine Good Citizen class (which dog and I attended as well) had previously worked with her due to leash-reaction issues, and are now on their way to earning their CGC - that's amazing progress!! She helped my pit bull, Arya and I earn her Canine Good Citizen certification last year, and it's been an amazing experience. I honestly couldn't recommend her more highly!

Yoni came to my house to assess all of my dogs as I had multiple issues in the home regarding my dogs ( I also foster) up to and including fights to the point I was actually scared of the animals I had adopted through rescue. He gave me tips and tools and guided me with simple instructions to handle the many dogs I have. Just a few short months later I am honestly no longer scared of them fighting and we have seen just a drastic change in theirs and my attitude with pack walks. I worked my way up to where I walk all five of them at once. I am also confident enough in myself as a pack leader with my personal dogs that I feel able to start fostering again. Thank you Yoni for being one of the tools and teachers to help me get to this point with my animals. Thanks also being an available resource when I have a question or concern. That alone is invaluable for someone who constantly brings home new animals to foster.

When we welcomed our Labrador retriever puppy, Charlie, into our family almost three years ago, we wanted her to be a part of our active lifestyle in a stress-free way. We knew that would require an investment of our time and resources into basic obedience training, but what we didn’t realize at the time was how profound an impact that training would have on us as a family. We first left Charlie with Angelika and Tino when she was just 10 weeks old for a 2-week board and train in their home. We had interviewed other dog trainers prior but it wasn’t until we met Angelika that we really felt at peace with leaving our new puppy. The foundation of on-leash training Charlie received during that stay was an eye-opening experience into what was possible for her. In the weekly follow-up classes that we attended (which we still attend 2.5 years later!) it became apparent to us just how much of dog training is human training. Angelika and Tino worked patiently with us as we learned to effectively communicate with Charlie as leaders of her pack. We also realized how much Charlie thrives in a training environment. Learning and practicing new commands has provided a purposeful, positive outlet for her energy and has helped to foster her happy, calm, and loving temperament. Much to Charlie’s delight, we continue to send her back for board and trains (i.e. “camp”) whenever we go out of town for more than a couple of days. She’s progressed so much in her off-leash training that she is able to stay off-leash while at the park, hiking, and on other outdoor adventures. We have complete and total trust that we’re in control of her at all times, allowing us to enjoy these experiences with absolutely zero stress. We’re not exaggerating when we say that on a daily basis, we receive compliments from complete strangers that we meet in parks, on trails, or in other public places who are blown away by how well behaved Charlie is. Aside from obedience training, Angelika and Tino have been instrumental in training Charlie to perform a number of medically-related service tasks, enabling me to have her registered as my service animal and join me wherever I go. She’s also an appreciated visitor at Craig’s mom’s memory care home, where, thanks to our work with Quality K9, she is able to interact with all of the residents in a calm and gentle manner, bringing joy into their lives with her regular visits. Our time with Charlie has been amazing and Angelika and Tino have played an integral role in that. In working with them, we’ve realized that you can’t put a price on the quality of life that comes from having a well-trained companion. As long as we have dogs, they’ll have Angelika and Tino in their lives!

Alexander took our 1 1/2 year old Labradoodle for a month to train him on some behavioral issues. We've had him back now for more than a week, and, oh my, what a difference! We have a different dog...more well-mannered, obedient, social, and relaxed. Now it is up to us to follow through with all the training and instruction from Alexander. I know this is a big part of making Reagan a "good citizen." But we are thrilled so far. We will have a follow-up session or two at our house. I hope we measure up in keeping Reagan the new dog he has become. Alexander is great to work with...his approach is professional, intelligent, and humane. And patient!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
