The over all training. Bruce took the time to teach me on how to walk, handle bad behaviours and general obedience training on my two puppies. I would recommend him to my families and friends in the future.

Elisa is an amazing and caring dog trainer. She has been a dog obedience trainer for many years. She helped me with my two dogs. They are more obedient and walk better on the leash. I would highly recommend her for your next dog trainer! You won't be disappointed!

Highly recommend Kim. She knows what she is doing and how to help you learn to train your dog. She's calm, soft spoken but firm with the dogs. We brought a Aussie puppy into the house with 2 adult Aussies. One of the adults wouldn't accept the puppy, having to be restrained. Within one week they were buddies and playmates. We then focused on basic obedience-sit, stay, down, come, leave it, etc. The dogs all responded to her approach quickly as did my wife and I. We will continue to work with her on heel & socialization. Her cost is very reasonable as is her offer of availability without further cost long term. Meet her, discuss her approach, you'll be quite pleased with the process and results.

I have tried obedience classes with my exuberant, hyper maltese previously with limited success. Cat trained my eccentric little pup to sit, wait, leave it, touch and come, as well as worked on her barking with one week of daily one-on-one training. It is obvious that she is very experienced and talented. I felt safe knowing how happy my puppy would be there with her big beautiful yard and friendly demeanour. I highly recommend Cat for dog training!!

Spot on Obedience Training was incredible getting our black lab to walk well loose leash. Before this training, our lab would tug and try to run -- she had never been on a leash before. Now she will walk next to me and watch for signals. If I stop, she stops. Spot On Obedience Training is the reason for her improvement!

I'm a first time dog owner and really had no idea what I was doing. We found Brandy on Thumbtack site and we decided to give it a shot. Max was already 7 months old so we had no idea what she would know so the idea of obedience training sounded wonderful. Brandy definitely taught the basics as well as the other things that we wanted with our dog. Brandy also talked through issues we've had, given great advice and tips and Working with Max on them has definitely made a huge difference. Max has learnt some amazing behaviors. He can sit, come, sleep and walk loosely on a leash. Our bond with our puppy is incredible and we owe a lot to Brandy for helping me overcome my fear of dogs. I recommend her for owners with dogs of any age. Brandy came to our house and totally understood my dog's dilemmas. She taught positive training techniques that actually worked! She helped us prevent Max from resource guarding and regain order in the house.

Dianne was great! She was personable and flexible working with my schedule. My dog made great strides with her, and we are well on our way to getting him registered as a service dog! If I wasn't moving, I'd be continuing my training and training my future dogs with Dianne. I 100% recommend her services.

An overall great experience, always on time, helpful, knowledgeable and left with a list of priority tasks each week. Always available to contact with questions and clarification. Great training at a very decent price as well! Has helped change some negative behaviors in my service dog in training so he can get back on the path to an amazing working dog!

Let me start off by saying that I rarely write reviews. I diligently read every review for any good or service I’m interested in but I just never seem to write a review about my experience. That being said, we received several responses from different trainers in regards to my inquiry. Sam from Stellar Pup responded quickly and provided a great price. I spoke with her on the phone and immediately felt comfortable with her service and price so I booked her for a training session in our home. I was upfront and told her I was interested in the package for 6 visits but wouldn’t make that commitment until our first session was complete. She arrived exactly at the time we set up and immediately went to work on our main concern which was biting (we have a goldendoodle and she was only about 12 weeks old at the time). Sam has been such a great trainer and our Mayzie is just in love with her. I highly recommend hiring Sam from Stellar Pup for any and all of your dog training requirements.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
