Bruce was extremely helpful for my pup, Bruno, and myself. Bruno has been having aggression issues since I rescued him from the pound a couple months ago. Bruce helped me out when I first adopted Bruno and gave me valuable pointers on how to handle his unusual behavior. When Bruno started exhibiting more aggressive behavior and was not improving, Bruce came back out to help us a second time, free of charge. I am extremely helpful for everything he has taught us and I cannot wait to see improvement with my pup. I would recommend Bruce for everyone, because he not only knows a lot about dogs and their behavior, but he also is a very friendly and engaging trainer. He teaches us how to handle our dogs' behavior so that we can continue to train while he is not present. Bruce showed me that he truly cares about my pup's well-being, as well as my own. He is great!

K9Katelynn has helped me and my dog tremendously! After rescuing her about a year ago and never having a bigger dog before I didn't realize how different it would be. I was not used to having something so big to control and knew I couldn’t do it on my own. I also had extremely high anxiety about her being around other dogs and it was deterring me from being able to take her for walks outside or let her socialize at the dog park because I was too nervous as to something bad happening, whether it be to her or to another dog. Tom has been extremely patient and thoughtful through our entire training process and reassured me every step of the way. I've found that her mastering 'simple' commands has made her a more obedient and calm dog all around, even when we are not training. She used to jump all over me, pull the leash, lick incessantly, etc. but with the help of K9Katelynn I now have the confidence and education to correct her behavior when necessary and I think our relationship has strengthened through the process. I have come to understand that I am as big an influence on my dog's behavior as she is so it was just as important for me to listen to the plan and by following everything he said we both have come a long way. He was always on time, was always flexible with my schedule and always available to answer my questions via text even if it was during the week when we were not in a scheduled session. I felt he really went above and beyond to help understand how I was feeling about certain issues and how we could work through them in a way we were all comfortable with. I really liked how he went out of his way to get to know me as a person as well as bond with my dog, it made me feel like he really cared about our success and wasn't just worried about the paycheck and whenever we were 'done' he was done whether he felt we were ready or not. I can't thank him enough and I can't say enough good things about K9Katelynn! :)

My dog Sammie would bark at then jump up at anyone that would come to the door (including my mom with a new hip). Elisa got him to stop that behavior, and even got him to stop going for the trash. I would definitely recommend Elisa to anyone who needs a trainer and a dog lover for their "spirited" pet!

I hired Nate after another trainer left my house running! I have a 3 month old golden retriever who I'm pretty sure is the devil's spawn:) Nate was recommended by a friend when she heard me complaining about her behavior. When I first called him to make an appointment, he spent about 30 minutes on the phone with me giving me tips on how to control my puppy. Nate has an amazing understanding of animal behavior and is so passionate about what he does. During his first visit, by dog was sitting by his side acting like an angel in about 5 minutes. It was amazing. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't see it with my own eyes. I recommend Nate to anyone with bad pet behaviors. As hard as you might try, you cant do it yourself!

Kimberly came to my home to help me with my two dogs (puppy and older dog) that seemed to be not getting along. She was willing to do an assessment and she gave me amazing feedback as to dog behavior that I did not understand. She was great at interpreting the problem and offered a wonderful solution that is already starting to work. I would highly recommend Kimberly for dog training.

She is a great asset to my family. She cares a lot for animals. My dog was diagnosed with liver failure, and has to be fed four times a day. Beth comes over to walk him two to three times a week. My dog Bogey loves it when she comes over. Beth is there for us, even if it is last minute. I can call her an hour before if there is a problem with me getting home in time. We just love her and trust her fully with my baby.

After speaking to Mary, I felt confident that she would take good care of my pet bunny, Geneva. She is VERY knowledgeable about animals and animal health, she seemed gentle and made a connection with Geneva easily. She was also quickly to respond and great about sending updates. I felt safe leaving my keys with her and she went out of her way to return them promptly. I will definitely hire her again in the future!

Brandy is amazing! Our dog requires a lot of patience and we couldn't ask for a more professional resource than Brandy. She is working with us to help make our business trips less stressful for our dog and she is persistent in her efforts to build a strong relationship with our dog. With our business travel increasing, 5 business week trips, yes that is correct, five weeks of trips on the books for the coming months so far... We are extremely thankful to have connected with Brandy.

I really like working with Dianne. Her knowledge of dogs and their behavior is outstanding!. Her opinion on what's occurring in a given situation, albeit behavioral or developmental (like a growth stage), is invaluable. The tips she gives on what to do in order to support a happy and healthy person-dog relationship are very useful. I never feel as though our sessions are confined by a time limit, and the support she gives via phone, email, and text is exceptional. When Dianne says call, text, or email at any time with any question or concern, she means it and will quickly respond. I am in awe when I watch her work with my puppy, and I appreciate her patience in watching me 'attempt' to repeat her excellent execution in handling/training. I can see myself working with her throughout my puppy's lifetime, as Dianne's help has been a priceless investment.

When I lived in Phoenix, I without fail used TLC to care for my cats while I was on vacation. In one instance, when I was seriously ill and in the hospital, Margie and staff came to my apartment and cared for my cats for 9 days on the spur of the moment. The staff is clean, experienced, courteous and Margie only hires caring animal lovers as staff. I would not hesitate to recommend TLC While You're Away to anyone in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area.

I went to take a tour of the school prior to having my training and I was very happy with how the staff treated me. Very friendly and helpful. Answered all my questions and was completely honest. And I think hats very important when it comes to working with animals. The facility was organized and clean. Which is awesome for me since I will also be boarding my pups there in the near future! I can't wait to start my training!! Thank you!

Maggie is a very experienced and educated handler and owner of dogs and horses. I trust very few people with the care of my animals and she is one of them! Many times I would agree "if you want a job done right you have to do it yourself" but that's not the case with Maggie. Friendly, educated, and experienced. That's all you need to know!

Yes, Mark is my brother. :) He has always been wonderful with animals. He treats dogs with patience and kindness, yet he is firm when he needs to be. He works well with both my 16 yr old Lab and 6 yr old Golden. He is also very reliable and trustworthy. He will do a great job with your precious pup. I highly recommend him.

    About

When people first get meet me I often get told "I have never met anyone like you before". This is because at first glance I appear as your average 19 year old boy. The more you spend real face-to-face time with me, almost everyone picks up on a very genuine, real vibe. For this reason I am not as social with my peers. It is hard to find legitimate, good-hearted people in this world. I have found my surrounding student body is typically caught up in their own lives, out for themselves, and/or don't see the big picture in life. I don't waste my time with them, instead I practice patience in finding people willing to put the same into relationships for the same good reasons as I. So, I have maybe a handful of actual friends, I have my family, and a lot of free time to spend caring for the sweet innocent souls of our beloved pets. You will have trouble finding someone with my loyalty and genuine heart.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
