Bob is incredible!! His methods have dramatically improved my quality of life. I've seen several therapists and he's easily the very best. Besides working wonders in his office--he has taught me how to do some hypno work for myself--on my own. Stellar dude. I recommend him to anyone.

Although it was my first visit, Ray is a kind and empathetic therapist. He helped me a great deal in just the first session. I will be returning to continue sessions with him. I would highly recommend this man if you are looking to regain what you have lost in a relationship.

I was really looking forward to going away to school but my freshman year turned out to be a disaster. I’m kind of an introvert but that never stopped me from making friends before. The school was so huge and there were so many people in my dorm that it kind of freaked me out. A lot of them, including my suite mates, were into partying, which I’m not, so the constant noise really got to me. I was too ashamed to tell my parents how unhappy I was, so I just tried to do my best. But I got so anxious and depressed I went to see the school counselor. She was nice and sympathetic but not really that helpful. I thought I was going to lose it, so I finally called home and told them what was going on. My dad is from the city where the school is so he asked some of his friends there about therapists who were good at working with people my age. I ended up with a list of people to try and saw three of them before choosing Ilisa. I’m not sure if her having kids in college made a difference but she seemed to understand exactly what I was going through, which was a big relief. She also helped me deal with the incredible stress and depression I was feeling with EMDR. It’s a pretty weird process, but it works! She also helped me understand the reasons why I was having such a hard time and helped me come up with strategies for dealing with them. I’m in my sophomore year now and pretty much back to my old self. I’m glad Ilisa’s there and will go back to her if I start to feel anxious or depressed again.

Counseling sessions with Kimberly are always something I look forward to. Kimberly is so caring and kind, and her guidance has helped me immensely with rebuilding my relationship with my sister and overcoming depression. I can honestly and gladly say that since starting sessions with Kimberly, I'm much happier now than I have been in years. I've been to several other therapists in the past, and Kimberly is by far the best.

I came to Mike a year and a half ago, completely distraught and hopeless. My OCD had reached a point I couldn't deal with anymore. I went to some website and Mike gave me a call and his voice just made me feel comforted immediately. When I met him we went to work right away. Fast forward to present time and I feel great. Mike has given me different tools to deal with my past manifesting itself into my present. It's been about 4 months since I've seen him last and he always done check ups. He's so intelligent and I have learned a lot from him. If you're willing to face your issues and put in the work, Mike is the therapist to go to. I'm forever grateful.

When I first came to see Michelle, I was six months into a recovery program for codependency and six months out of a two-year relationship with a married man. Every day I was battling mental and emotional demons that were threatening to consume me at any point in time. Emotionally I don’t think I could have handled any more pain, any more tears than I was already living. Mentally, I was tearing myself down every chance I got, beating and hating on myself more than any person deserves. To say I had hit an all-time low would be an understatement. I was at the bottom. Death would have been a welcome relief. I learned about Michelle from my sponsor in recovery. I was already seeing small changes in my self-awareness and self-love by working the recovery program, but was still in so much unbearable pain that I jumped at the opportunity to further my healing. Having been to see counselors and therapists since I was in my early teens, I was familiar with how the process worked and even a little skeptical. But the appeal of this kind of recovery was that it would emotionally free me from my past. Making the appointment to see Michelle was the most hope I had felt in years. During my first meeting, Michelle asked me some general questions about where my anxiety stemmed from and what my biggest problem areas were, and along with some deeper probing questions that brought my emotions to the surface. We decided focused on my fear of abandonment and need to be “picked” by the people I love the most – from my nuclear family to my romantic relationships. Michelle guided me through my toughest relationships, using her intuition to advance the tapping and healing process, and lower my emotional attachment from a 10 (what felt like was 100) to a 1. I couldn’t believe it! I felt an openness in my heart space I’d never experienced before, a freedom that hadn’t existed. I could breathe. I could feel. I wasn’t scared anymore. It was as if the tares were being sewn back together, one at a time. Granted, I had a lot of them. But that was ok, because now there was a solution, not just a problem anymore. I have had the opportunity not only to experience the healing Michelle’s EFT practice provides, but to witness the freedom, strength and hope it brings to some of my most dear loved ones. I am incredibly thankful for her and the rapid healing EFT has brought to my life.

I was having a very stressful time of it with a close family member, and Jivana knew exactly what the best course of action was for me in that situation. Jivana really ‘saved the day’ for me! I was so grateful to be able to work with her when I did. I’d highly recommend her as a healer, therapist and counselor. She is unusually insightful, sensitive and amazingly wise!

I have found my training and interactions with Linda have really helped me to learn to stay-in-the-moment and to be a much more caring spouse. My listening skills have changed for the better and I am able to stay calm even when things get a little chaotic around me. She has helped me to see and understand the situations which can cause me to become overwhelmed and trigger some of the negative emotions I have experienced in the past when interacting with my spouse. I would highly recommend her as a marriage and couples therapist. Arthur P.

I was recommended to Mande by a friend of mine. I was searching for help in my relationship. I felt my fiance and I had been drifting apart. I have suffered my entire life with trust issues and fear of the future. This was holding our relationship back from actually setting a date and moving forward. We started getting into the thinking "we don't need marriage to validate our relationship". We have been engaged for almost seven years. I contacted Mande and the one thing that really connected me to her, was that she could instantly see what the "real" problem was that has been holding us back. I had some unresolved abandonment issues and low self esteem that I was refusing to face. By doing so, it was causing my partner to push away and be less available for me. After just a few short weeks, we started to see a huge shift in our relationship. Best news is, we finally set a date and our getting married in October of this year. I am so grateful for our work together and the friends we made in the process. I feel like my whole world has shifted. We have tried other therapists and I never saw great results. I love her unique way of coaching, I even started working for myself, which is something I had been to afraid to do for many years. My eyes are wide open and there are now so many opportunities for myself and my relationship.

Ms. Paukova has worked with me as a musician for the past three years. She has always been professional and has written as well as arranged the music for our events. She is currently working with me and hopefully will continue to do so in the future. I have also watched her work with her autistic son using music to teach him skills to help him prepare for his future. I feel she is very competent and would be an asset for anyone who would employ her.

I had the privilege of working with Khara 6 years ago in a therapeutic setting. Due to 9 years of consistency in the field, she continually shows loyalty to her work environment and her clients. When providing therapy with clients, Khara carries a fine balance of compassion and intellectual challenge. This fine balance with the client's involvement promotes growth and effective ways to manage challenges. Khara is very insightful and provides great guidance. Khara is extremely professional and prioritizes the needs of her clients and for this reason I highly recommend Khara as a therapist.

As a therapeutic client of Steven Gans I cannot hope in the space allowed here to adequately describe the life-transforming experience it has been for me to know and work with Steve. Steve once described his unique style as ‘integrative’ (though he has also used the terms ‘Socratic’, and ‘textual’). But it requires something like a ‘Latour litany’ to account for just some of the prime integers: the Greek Classics, Freud, Levinas, Derrida, Lacan, existential-phenomenology, and R. D. Laing and the Philadelphia Association, London, where I first had the privilege of meeting Steve. Steve once said to me that ‘people get the therapist they deserve’, in which case I must have been extraordinarily deserving – as would anyone else fortunate enough to have the opportunity to avail themselves of Steve’s inimitable services.

      About

Sometimes, life just doesn’t go the way we want. Too often, we find ourselves stuck in a bad place, leaving us hurt, lonely, angry or depressed, or just plain out of control. Why is it that we do the things we don’t want to do, and we don’t do the things that we know are good for us? I provide a confidential, non-judgmental place to re-engineer your life. I will strive to help you experience growth from the pain of life, and empower you to move forward, better able to face the inevitable problems that come your way. I look forward to the opportunity to partner with you, to help you clarify what you want from your life and how to go about getting it. My primary area of interest is in working with couples, although I do work with individuals also. This includes pre-marital counseling, communication difficulties, recovery from affairs and sex addiction, and parenting together after divorce. In 2011, I completed a certification in Sex Addiction Therapy (CSAT®) through Patrick Carnes. The CSAT® program is fast becoming the industry's standard certification for all therapists working with individuals who suffer from addictive and compulsive sexual behaviors. I received a master of arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Azusa Pacific University, and I am a marriage and family therapist registered intern (IMF#64851), under the supervision of Curtis Miller, Psy.D., D. Min, MFT#31636. I am trained to use the PREPARE/ENRICH inventories, a comprehensive couple assessment tool for pre-marital counseling. I handle couples and betrayal.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
