We had Precious Possessions pack and move us on 5/4-5/6. The packers did a great job with our belongings and worked very efficiently. The same packers were also the movers. They worked very hard non-stop in the hot Az sun. Before we hired movers, I had Greg (the owner) come out and give me an estimate and he was very kind and thorough in his explanation of his services. Everyone we worked with at Precious Possessions was very courteous and polite. These are definitely the guys you want to hire! I don't want to move ever again, but if I do, I'm calling them.

The only thing I would say as a critique was that the time was scheduled at 10:30 A.M., and movers arrived at 11 A.M. Otherwise, Victor, Junior, and Phil were great. The guys were good and efficient. We had to make a second stop before the final destination. Unfortunately, my personal vehicle started overheating and decided to stop running. They were very patient and eventually we all made it to the final destination. They were all careful with my items and it was very nice working with them.

Amazing experience today with Let's Help Movers! They were extremely punctual, and got started right away. They were professional and friendly and asked all the questions needed to get the job done correctly for me. They took great care of my items by wrapping them and carrying them carefully not to damage anything. We ran into a small hiccup at the storage unit with the couch being a little too big but they took their time to try a few different ways and figure out the best way to get it in without any damage. A+ movers and I will 100% be hiring them again when the time comes.

A well oiled machine, these movers handled everything with white glove care, and high efficiency. Not a scratch, ding or anything on furniture or home. They even have a feel for where things will work (after doing a zillion moves), so their suggestions were all right on. Highly recommended.

My mom needed to move from a studio to a condo and was quoted 450 from other movers. These guys were 150 TOTAL and my mom loved them. They showed up early and moved everything exactly how she requested. They were professional and worked fast. My mom couldn’t say enough good things about them! Thank you for taking such great care! This will be the only moving company I’ll refer people to.

I used Dignity Moving services today for my move. They had to do three stops. I had been renting two bedrooms for two months while I waited for the perfect place for my kids and I. So my BF stored my sectional at his place in Ahwatukee. They got my sectional loaded in about 10-15 min from the THIRD floor. Talk about fast!! Then the movers drove to my place in Chandler to load up my two rooms of stuff. Again it was done super fast! Then we went to the final destination in Mesa / Gilbert area to unload everything. They competed the entire job and 3 stops in about 2.5 hours. About 40 min was driving. So they are extremely fast and much better than movers I have used in the past. I highly recommend.

We cannot say enough nice things about Sean and Momenturm Movers. He always responded to my calls/texts very quickly, and was courteous, professional and willing to do whatever it took to make our move as stressless as possible. Enroute to our final destination, Sean was following my husband when my husband's truck had a tire blow out on a very treacherous part of the I-17. Sean and his partner changed my husband's tire, and they were on the road again in just a short time. We were especially grateful for his kindness, as my husband's back would not allow him to change a tire, and he would have been waiting on the side of the road for AAA. Once they arrived at our destination, Sean and his partner quickly unloaded his trailer, and neatly stacked our boxes in the garage. I would not hesitate to hire Sean and Momentum Movers again, as they are "can do" guys.

Overall, everything went well and the movers were good. It seemed at times they took a little longer then necessary explaining what they were going to do, rather than just doing it. It was obvious that one of the movers were being trained, he did a very good job and worked hard, but it did slow the job down a bit. We appreciated the attention to detail the guys provided Thank you!

Oscar really helped me out today as the movers I hired backed out 2 hours before they were supposed to arrive, and he was able to come through for me and help me move just a few hours later. He and his partner were friendly, moved quick, and most of all got me out of a pinch. Thank you for your help, would definitely hire again!

The movers were professional and efficient. They went above my expectations and were willing to help me with things I couldn't get fully packed myself, as well as fully reassembling furniture that had to be taken apart to be moved.

Pat was the best mover I've ever had! Brought my stuff from Los Angeles to San Francisco and the move was a total breeze! From the start Pat gave a great price (significantly lower than other movers) and was easy to communicate with. During the actual move he instantly relieved my stress and moved my stuff quickly and efficiently. Can't recommend him enough. Excellent mover!

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
