A typical piano lesson involves sightreading a song the student has chosen from a book and a couple songs the instructor has chosen based on the student's level. Optionally, the student may choose a song to learn by ear. Technical exercises are added for finger strength and muscle memory. Music theory is sprinkled throughout the lesson. The typical guitar lesson is a bit different, focusing on chords, tablature, strum patterns, scales and songs to learn by ear for students wishing to learn pop/rock styles. Students wishing to learn classical music will focus more on sightreading.
