we live in Maricopa County in north scottsdale. .mike submitted all plans and paperwork for the construction of a 4 stall shedrow for our horses. we were told by neighbors the approval process would take several months to complete. we received our permits in 4 weeks. there were no questions about the project. this was due to mike's knowlege of the county drainage and flood dept and the planning and zoning dept.. he also submitted and had approved several other projects to bring our property into complete compliance with the with planning and zoning depts requirements. we would highly recommend mike as a professional and knowlegable architect

Carson was the Gen. Contractor on our house remodeling. It was an extensive remodeling of both exterior and interior work. The exterior required retaining and decorative walls with extensive regrading and backfill work, new roofing, stucco and painting. The interior included new kitchen cabinets, removal of walls, rebuilding of an entry coat closet with angled walls, new drywall, hanging of new doors, new dryer vent and floor tile. There was a mistake on the dimensions for the new quartz countertop which Carson insisted had to be removed and replaced. This impresed me as he backed me up and not the subcontractor. Carson was easy to work with, knows his business, and was a professional. The quality of the work by Carson Rogers and his subs was of high quality and better than a lot of residencial contractors in the business today. We are very happy with the outcome. I will be calling on Carson Rogers to do our bathroom remodelings next spring.

Ali is a true professional! He and his crews totally remodeled a 2-bathroom, 2-bedroom pool house. He listens to his clients about what they wish to achieve, makes good suggestions, expertly designs a plan and executes the plan successfully and timely. He does not push his own agenda like so many architects and contractors. The passion Ali has for his work makes him an ideal partner in building and renovations.

George and his team exceeded my expectations as the architect in charge of our coffee shop tenant improvement project. The level of service was exceptional. To summarize, George does whatever it takes to get the job done when it needs to get done, and does so with a pleasant smile on his face the entire time. The professionalism and responsiveness demonstrated by George and his team throughout the project were exceptional. Between late night emails, and quick text responses, George will deliver a level of responsiveness that makes you feel like your project is the only one he is working on. His pricing is fair and clearly stated in his contract. He won't nickel and dime you. My wife and I had three goals that our architect had to meet; do it quickly, do it cheaply, and do it well. George nailed all three. If we ever decide to build a second location, the choice of architect is obvious. I could imagine anyone working any harder for us than Reset Studios did.

Contacted Mark for a T.I. project. Mark was Outstanding through out the entire project. This was my first time using a Architect, and Mark walked me through all the steps, and was very professional. Every time I had a question, Mark was easy to get ahold of, and always took care of my questions. Mark brought a lot of experience to my project, and was able to recommend lots of different ways to move the project forward. I will for sure use Marc Architecture again on my next project.

Joe designed our snack bar facility which was completed in 2012. I have worked with Joe over many years both as a project manager and an architect, while I was facility manager at the community college. I have found his approach to complex issues of design and construction both innovative and practical. He is very aware of local code requirements and regulations.

Reactor Studios did an excellent job in taking a my broad vision for a custom retirement home and developed a rational, comprehensive plan. Ken Miller took the time to understand my wants and needs and added many construction details and features that I never considered. Reactor Studios developed the plan, assisted with vetting general contractors and suppliers, and provided valuable project oversight. The result was an architecturally significant yet highly practical home. He truly is a visionary Architect.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
