Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a good bartender?

Put some time on your calendar to research and compare top-rated bartenders near you online. Start by looking at their ratings and services. For example, some bartending services will provide a waitstaff, glassware, ice, coolers, food and more.

Next, look at their photos of past events and read the customer reviews. Find feedback on the bartenders’ services. Did they offer fair pricing? Did they show up on time to set up? Did they bring all of the appropriate drinks, cups, supplies and decorations? Did they interact politely with the party guests and provide a pleasant overall experience? And did they do the agreed-upon cleanup afterward?

Narrow down your top choices, and start contacting the bartenders. Ask for cost estimates for your event, and tell them how many people will be attending, what type of event it is and what services you require. You should also ask them questions about their experience.

Bartenders may need a license in your state, county or city to work at a private party. Make sure they’re properly certified before you hire anyone.

How much does it cost to hire a bartender for a private party?

Hiring a bartender for a private party typically costs between $270 and $390 in total. On an hourly basis, expect to pay at least $40 to $60 per hour, as well as a flat fee. How much you’ll pay, however, depends on the time of year or day, the size of the party and other factors. Get in touch with a few bartenders near you and request a free estimate — it’s the only way to get an accurate idea of how much private bartending services will cost you.

Do bartenders need to be licensed?

Certain counties, cities and states may require licensing. Check your local government’s regulations before starting your search.

In many cases, you might want to choose a bartender who has a license and/or certification. If you’re considering hiring a bartender for an upcoming event or a special occasional, check their online profiles to find out what credentials they have. If you can’t find the information online, don’t hesitate to ask them directly when requesting to receive free estimates.

What do bartenders cost for a wedding?

It costs roughly between $270 and $390 to hire a bartender. However, if you need a wedding bartender, you should request cost estimates from bartenders near you. Depending on the drinks you plan to serve, the number of guests and other factors, your total cost will vary.

How much should you tip wedding bartenders?

Sometimes, a gratuity is included in your final bill. If not, consider tipping your wedding bartenders between 10% and 15%. However, this is not a set-in-stone rule. You can always tip more, perhaps 20%-25%, for great service.

We had a great house warning party tonight with some close friends. We had two great bartenders who did an excellent jobs with our bourbon theme. Our guest enjoyed great bourbon drinks and commented on how friendly the bartender were. We will be asking them back in December for a Christmas party.

We hired last call for our Friendsgiving this past weekend and are so happy we did. Kortney was our bartender for the evening and she went above and beyond and was so very kind. Working with Debbie to get everything arranged was a great experience as well. She gets back to you extremely quick and was very accommodating to my requests. Definitely book them for your next event!

Clint and Brittany were awesome to work with! Highly recommended. From the beginning, Clint was very responsive, straight-forward and organized. He helped us pick drinks for the party and went the extra mile during preparation. At the party, Brittany was the bartender and she was just perfect. Punctual, great-attitude and very organized. She set up a good looking bar area and was very accommodating with our requests.

I would HIGHLY recommend JR and CC for any event, private or public. They were extremely responsive right from the start and answered all of my questions quickly, and made me feel comfortable with the process. CC was amazing - everyone LOVED her. They had to think quickly as some of our ingredients ran out for certain drinks, and she knew exactly how to "mix-master" what we needed, without even a blink. They were punctual, friendly, and overall a joy to work with. Will definitely use them again and HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend them to anyone looking for a bartending service.

We hired Essential Bartending for our backyard wedding reception. At first, James was very professional. We talked a few times on the phone before the reception and he seemed to be the perfect fit for our party, eager and excited. James arrived on time and did a great job setting up the bar. He brought garnishes and mixers like triple sec and sweet and sour mix. We provided wine, liquor and many non alcoholic beverages like soda and RedBull. The first few hours of the reception went really well. James seemed attentive and all of our guests looked to be having a great time. Around 10:30pm I noticed that James began slurring his speech. I don't drink so the slurring was very obvious to me. Soon after, James began to have trouble walking. I hated to ask, but I had to. I asked James if he had been drinking but he completely avoided to the question saying that his foot hurt?! By 11:30pm, as James was trying to pack up the bar, he was unable to keep his balance. James had gotten drunk. My uncle, brother, and new husband called James an Uber and helped him get in the car. James was so drunk that he left all of his belongings (including his tips) at our home. I finished packing up the bar with the help of my friends and family. After James was helped to the Uber, five guests then told me that they had seen the bartender drinking behind the bar, but most had assumed that it was non alcoholic beverages. As a client, I consider James' actions stealing. He stole alcohol from us and drank enough of it to become incredibly intoxicated. I was sure that James would call the next day and profusely apologize. But I didn't receive a message on Thumbtack until 4 days later saying that James needed my number again because he had lost his phone. I gave him my husband's number; James then called my husband and offered no apology. James simply wanted to schedule a time to come by and get his stuff. James did not offer an apology or even mention anything that happened in person. My husband had to ask James what happened and his response was that he 'enjoyed the guests and the party too much.' That was the last time we heard from James. Obviously a hugely disappointing ending to what was supposed to be one of the greatest parties of my life. I truly hope this was a one time instance for James as it seems many other reviewers had much better outcomes. Unfortunately it is my strong recommendation not to hire Essential Bartending Services.
