I hired Nick to remove and repair a few kitchen cabinets that had been damaged by water. The cabinets smelled musty and were warped. Upon removing the cabinetry from the wall he discovered a leaky pipe which had caused the dry wall to rot and mold. There was also a hole that lead outside along the base of the house. I had been noticing a sour smell in the house since I moved in 4 months ago but couldn't locate the culprit. I also had been having a cock roach issue. Anyway, I'm so glad he found the problem and was able to repair the pipe, drywall and cabinetry. Now my house smells wonderful and its bug free! I'm relieved to know it's taken care of and that I won't have further problems any time soon. He did such a great job and has such reasonable prices that I hired him to complete a backsplash for my kitchen as well. Work so far is meticulous!

My plan was to lay my own tile until I learned I had taken on more than I bargained for. The tile was natural stone, and once I had had enough, Matthew came to the rescue. He saw what I was attempting to do and did not minimize my attempt. He listened to me and talked to me about what he would do. We discussed the timeline and, of course, cost. The cost was more reasonable than I had anticipated. Throughout the project, Matthew kept me advised of the progress, including asking if I wanted to see pictures, which I declined, opting to be surprised when it was complete. While it was only two bedrooms he did, the change in the house was amazing. The way he chose to lay the multi-colored stone tiles was aesthetically pleasing. It made me want to keep remodeling the house. There are other remodeling projects I am considering about which I've told Matthew. He has already sent me pictures of what I've described I want to accomplish, which shows he totally "gets it." I'm looking forward to continuing working with him!

The finished product looks outstanding. True craftsman in mesquite cabinetry, which at times does take longer to complete but the end product is worth it.

Bob designed and built a built-in bookcase with cabinets in our den. He had an extra hurdle---a high end store bought desk was already in the den. He completed an amazing job of joining the two together seamlessly. His work is meticulous. Bob did a beautiful job of making our den a centerpiece. He was conscientious, prompt and best of all, he was very reasonable. He is going to build and install a walk-in closet with shelves, drawers, etc, in the Fall. I'll have him do every cabinet project I have in the future! Sherry B

I am sincerely pleased to recommend Stephen Matthews of Cabinet Answers. I wanted to update my kitchen without spending a fortune by rearranging some cabinets and adding an under-cabinet microwave oven. I had several contractors and handymen come to look a the job but none of them got back to me with a bid. Stephen was recommended to me by the brother of a friend. He came to my house and looked at the project and got back to me with a reasonable bid within 24 hours. Steve did an excellent job of figuring out the best way to use the cabinets I had, and he added many custom touches such as making and installing a shelving unit and pantry door which gave the finished kitchen a very up-to-date and polished look. I am extremely pleased with Steve's work and I have been very impressed with his strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, his professionalism and his positive attitude. I recommend Stephen Matthews of Cabinet Answers very highly and I plan to use him for another project in the future.

About

We renew your kitchen and bath cabinets and other wood furnitures. Our kitchen restoration starts at $500, which includes refacing of old cabinets and repair of water-damaged cabinets. Hello! My name is Steve Mock, and I live in Tucson, AZ. In the last ten years, I have built custom-made furniture, including a Red Oak drop front desk, an end table with a curved arm for the lamp and a magazine rack base. Also, a men's custom chest of drawers and all-matching ladies dresser and two night stands. I resized a California king-size water bed to a queen-size bed with a sleep number mattress. A 16x20 storage building was converted into a home office and art and craft room with carpet and tile floors, Formica cabinets and counter tops, recessed lighting, fans, heating and air conditioning, and a 4-foot skylight. Recently, I converted a small bedroom into a sewing room and office combo and installed bamboo wood flooring. I have worked in plumbing, heating and air conditioning, and electrical works for the last 35 years. I am thankful for the abilities I have been given, and I enjoy my work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
